I just got this used outboard for my Avon, and I'm confused. All the other outboards I've used shoot a stream of water out of them as part of the cooling system I imagine. This one I jsut got doesn't. Is there something wrong with it, or do some smaller outboards simply not "pee?"

Thanks fot answering a stupid question!

Not a stupid question. Comes up a few times. For a few years in the 90's Merc/Mariner (only the paint colour is different) plumbed the cooling system so that water only came from the telltale when the thermostat opened. They realized the error of their ways and re-plumbed it (~1997?) so water came out all the time.

Chris..............

Then again there were a lot of 9.9s that didn't have the thermostats installed from the factory. The 15s did. Not sure of the logic behind that move. Marketing seems to have more to do with such silliness than the Engineering Dept.

You might just have some crud blocking the pee hole. While the motor is running (in the water or on muffs) remove the hose from the outlet and see if water will come out of the hose. If it doesn't, consider replacing the water pump.

Actually it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the water pump done anyhow. You never really know it's condition until you get it apart and see. Change the gearlube at the same time. A new set of sparkplugs wouldn't be a bad idea either. Anytime I deal with a used motor, those three things are kinda automatic. That way I know what I have, not what I inherited.

Re: 90's Mariner 9.9hp

I am a bit confused now. I - like Themansfield - have a Mariner 9.9 4 stroke engine built in 1996. It doesn't have a stream of water from it when I start it up. I was encourage by the reply from achris - as this would explain why there was no stream unless the temperature of the engine got high enough to trigger the thermostatic valve to open and let water into the cooling system. However, the response from WillyBWright has confused me 'cos now I don't know whether the engine is performing as it should or has a cooling system fault -HELP!

Take the thermostat out and see if it pees then. Whilst doing that pop the stat into hot water and see if it opens. If it doesn't then you have a faulty stat and will have to replace it. If you don't get water out the tell tale without the stat in place then you have a cooling system problem. ie either a blockage in the block or the water pump is faulty.
I may be wrong with the age of your engine but some had a flushing point somewhere whereby you could flush the system out with a hose. May noy apply to your motot though.

Re: 90's Mariner 9.9hp

I fell for this one, having never had a thermostat on a small motor like this. So I took the lower unit off to replace the water pump components only to find they are all brand new. Now I am replacing them anyway.

My question is this, there was no gasket between the lower unit and the driveshaft housing. Before I put this all back together, is there supposed to be? How am I supposed to seal it?
Thanks for any help.
