I think you're confusing something else with the trim sender. There's only 1 sender. It's on the swivel bracket where the tilt ram attaches on top. It might not have one. Look for the pin where the trim ram attaches. It would be on one side of that. If you see both sides of the pin, then you don't have one. They probably came as an add-on in 1980.

Re: hooking up trim gauge

There should only be one on the port side. I've never seen one mounted on the starboard side. The rotating part of the sender locates into the slot in the end of the pin that goes through the swivel bracket and holds the top of the tilt ram to it. as you tilt up and down the pin rotates relative to the bracket and moves the sender. One of the sender wires should be short and have a ring on the end, ground it. The other should have a bullet connector on it, connect it to the wire that runs up to the trim gauge.

Chris...........

i agree, but i have 1 on the port and starboard sides? i need new ones because the plastic piece that fits into the pin notch is broken on both sides. there is 2 stainless screws and a stainless strap that holds them on,(on each side of motor?).

Re: hooking up trim gauge

one is for trim gauge, the other is a limit switch for the tilt.the switch prevents the engine from being trimmed out of water. then the tilt will raise it further for loading.the switch at the top of your throttle handle is the trim the switch just above your lockout is the tilt.
