my manual came yesterday from "seloc" wow,2 days only,im impressed!
i rehearsed the procedure for dropping the lower unit and replacing the water pump and impeller, while in bed last nite reading the manual..

went to work today, got done 1pm,raced home to start ripping the lower unit off,it was quite simple,i had no problems...dropped the l/u after drainning all the l/u oil 1st,it was very low on oil and there were some milky spots...and some metalic residue on the magnetic drain plug, not alot, but it was there....

after gently placing the l/u on a heavy blanket i removed the water pump housing, i was quite impressed with the condition of the housing and water pump, even the gasket looked as if it were only a week old, then came the impeller inspection,well..... it was totally destroyed to say the least, every arm on the impeller was cracked in half, and i immediately assumed that was the reason for the overheating at higher rpms,

i brought the impeller housing with me to the marine mart as requested by the guy there per my phone call,he informed me that the condition of the housing was in outstanding condition he said it looked as if it were brand new,( this boat was purchased last april from a reputable dealership who claimed the engine had been completely and thoroughly gone over and the cooling system had been replaced, ive used the boat for 7 tornaments and the engine has possibly no more then 10 hours use total from me.)

the guy at the marine mart told me he see's no reason to buy a water pump based on the condition of the housing and the like new condition of it. the impeller on the other hand was a different story,he sold me the impeller i needed,1 quart of quick silver l/u oil and a pump, and 6 ngk spark plugs....total: 63$

i raced back home happy to believe that the impeller was my culprit...and anxious to put it in and get the l/u back on with no problems,
marine mart guy told me to place the impeller on the shaft all the way down, then fit the housing over it and turn the drive shaft until the impeller fit into place, this i did,and it woyked!

i fastened down all the bolts, replaced the big rubber "o" ring i removed then tackled my speedometer problem......well the intake was extremely clogged, not the hoses, the whole intake from the triangle about 5 inches up the l/u..

after attempting to hammer wire clothes hangers, and an old tv antennae down there, nothing woyked! i said,im going to the hardware store to by a 10 inch long drill bit and im drillin that rat ******* out, this is i did,and now air goes through it when blown thru the hoses, now the stuff which was kegged up in there was quite alarming, it looked like packed gun powder, little metalic flakes and grey substance,i kept drillin until i broke free...

i replaced the l/u after have to turn the crank shaft a few times to get it aligned,i made sure the water poppet was fit back in as well as that other unit with a hex end on it,(possibly steering) i have no idea...but its back where it belongs....

i cleaned up the area, looked for parts i may have forgot, seen nothing,i put on the ear muffs, toyned on the water, fired the girl up,(do all mercs take so long to pump water thru the tell tale?) soon she was streaming nice thru the tell tale (still quite hot though even after 15 mins of idling) the stream was extremely strong but it was constant flow none the less, i shifted her into gear and reached about 3500 rpms and the stream thru the tell tale got increasingly more stronger,( good sign i hope?)
the engines overhear warning did not come on while at higher rpms after even 5 mins,so i shut her down and i hope shes alrite ,i dont know exactly when im gonna get the chance to get her in water, maybe ill go to the salt water bay 3 miles away saturday morning just to test her out,i will give a follow up as soon as i do...

mike
