my manual came yesterday from "seloc" wow,2 days only,im impressed!
i rehearsed the procedure for dropping the lower unit and replacing the water pump and impeller, while in bed last nite reading the manual..

went to work today, got done 1pm,raced home to start ripping the lower unit off,it was quite simple,i had no problems...dropped the l/u after drainning all the l/u oil 1st,it was very low on oil and there were some milky spots...and some metalic residue on the magnetic drain plug, not alot, but it was there....

after gently placing the l/u on a heavy blanket i removed the water pump housing, i was quite impressed with the condition of the housing and water pump, even the gasket looked as if it were only a week old, then came the impeller inspection,well..... it was totally destroyed to say the least, every arm on the impeller was cracked in half, and i immediately assumed that was the reason for the overheating at higher rpms,

i brought the impeller housing with me to the marine mart as requested by the guy there per my phone call,he informed me that the condition of the housing was in outstanding condition he said it looked as if it were brand new,( this boat was purchased last april from a reputable dealership who claimed the engine had been completely and thoroughly gone over and the cooling system had been replaced, ive used the boat for 7 tornaments and the engine has possibly no more then 10 hours use total from me.)

the guy at the marine mart told me he see's no reason to buy a water pump based on the condition of the housing and the like new condition of it. the impeller on the other hand was a different story,he sold me the impeller i needed,1 quart of quick silver l/u oil and a pump, and 6 ngk spark plugs....total: 63$

i raced back home happy to believe that the impeller was my culprit...and anxious to put it in and get the l/u back on with no problems,
marine mart guy told me to place the impeller on the shaft all the way down, then fit the housing over it and turn the drive shaft until the impeller fit into place, this i did,and it woyked!

i fastened down all the bolts, replaced the big rubber "o" ring i removed then tackled my speedometer problem......well the intake was extremely clogged, not the hoses, the whole intake from the triangle about 5 inches up the l/u..

after attempting to hammer wire clothes hangers, and an old tv antennae down there, nothing woyked! i said,im going to the hardware store to by a 10 inch long drill bit and im drillin that rat ******* out, this is i did,and now air goes through it when blown thru the hoses, now the stuff which was kegged up in there was quite alarming, it looked like packed gun powder, little metalic flakes and grey substance,i kept drillin until i broke free...

i replaced the l/u after have to turn the crank shaft a few times to get it aligned,i made sure the water poppet was fit back in as well as that other unit with a hex end on it,(possibly steering) i have no idea...but its back where it belongs....

i cleaned up the area, looked for parts i may have forgot, seen nothing,i put on the ear muffs, toyned on the water, fired the girl up,(do all mercs take so long to pump water thru the tell tale?) soon she was streaming nice thru the tell tale (still quite hot though even after 15 mins of idling) the stream was extremely strong but it was constant flow none the less, i shifted her into gear and reached about 3500 rpms and the stream thru the tell tale got increasingly more stronger,( good sign i hope?)
the engines overhear warning did not come on while at higher rpms after even 5 mins,so i shut her down and i hope shes alrite ,i dont know exactly when im gonna get the chance to get her in water, maybe ill go to the salt water bay 3 miles away saturday morning just to test her out,i will give a follow up as soon as i do...

mike

Hi Quantumman,

Sounds like you did a pretty good job.

The time for water to start coming thruogh the telltale. Yes, all V6 mercs take a while. Before the water can come out the entire block and both heads have to fill up. When you stop your engine take a look at how much water drains out. All that has to be replaced before the telltale will flow.

One thing I am concerned about is that you ran the engine at 3500rpm for 5 minutes on the muffs. I would be pulling the l/u off again and checking the impeller. A standard tap can't supply enough water for these pumps with the engine running any more than about 1500rpm. You could have burned the new impeller.

The grey flacky stuff sounds like aluminum oxide, corrosion. Keep an eye on that and keep the passage washed out.

Other than that keep us posted. :)

Chris...........

thanx acris,
actually,i dont think i got the rpms over 1500,and it wasnt nearly 5 mins at high rpms, maybe 2 minutes if even that,i really only jacked up the rpms for maybe 40 seconds,im scared to go high rpms with only muffs on the engine....

i will try to get her out this weekend even if only for an hour or so on the bay,i hate running in salt water but the closest lake is about an hour and a half,,so i guess the bay will have to be my testing grounds.....

mike

Sounds good....

Flush the engine on the muffs, after every run in salt water!

And like Chris said don't run the engine above 1500 rpms using a garden hose...One thing you can always keep an eye on is to make sure that excess water leaks out around the muffs when running the motor. If it does (assuming you have the intakes covered completely) that means that you are providing more water than the pump can handle at that rpm. Above 2000 or so, my garden hose can't keep up with the pump.

Did you find that the impeller was shreaded into small pieces? Or were you able to find most all that may have broken off? If you think you lost some, they could have been sucked up into the water passages :( . So keep that in mind if you still have an overheat problem. Some might be stuck up there. But it looks like you have it licked... Good luck and let us know.

P.S. Did you turn the crank shaft clockwise when installing the housing on the impeller?

Re: the results after i dropped the lower unit off merc-150

kc?
the water ALWAYS shoots out from all around the l/u with the muffs on,its getting PLENTY of water.....

the IMPELLER was all intact except for the legs on the starfish were all broken in half, there was absolutely no broken peices off it anywhere and there was NO bits and peices of impeller anywhere in the housing.....

i believe i turned the shaft clockwise as i am right handed and thats the most obvious way to turn the shaft with the way i was holding the l/u in my crotch between my legs......

im still concerned whetehr ive licked the speedo problem although i can finally blow air thru the entire intake, hoses included,i just cant seem to imagine how much passageway is needed for this to be efficient enough to work, well we will see when and if she hits the bay this weekend, i am kinds in the mood for some crabs and or fresh seafood,, hmmmmm, which bass rod and reel do i want to sacrifice for a day of salt water fishing? is that sacreligious? i wont tell anyone if you dont,,hee heee....

i'll keep everyone posted
mike

I dont like needle bearings and no load speeds. makes for problems. however after 14 years of dyno testing at 5 to 6 thousand rpm I have never had a tap water not supplying the water pump problem.granted we cant run it long but its something that I do with regularity.
good luck and quit with the no load or you may get to see what the term"runaway" means:) :) :)

dude
ya outta hear a 225 OMC on the muffs at full throttle with full load.
its audible for several miles
I used to tick off my neighbors:) :)
thats dyno testing. dang near better than sex and a lot cheaper in the long run
good luck and keep posting

One other thing don't dry start the motor even for a few second on the ramp or on the driveway! Only takes that long to burn the impeller. Good luck.
CU

--------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!
