Prop test advice

I began testing props today. My 8hp mercury comes stock with a 9 pitch prop. It lugs a bit. My local dealer loaned me a 5.5 pitch. The boat ran exactly the same speed according to gps only the 5.5 pitch ran as if ringing its neck. I am now going to try a 7 pitch. Now what will this one do? More speed? Same speed less rpm? Any advice?

Btw: thanks for all the info you guys post.

Re: Prop test advice

I do not have a tach for the motor. I am trying to find one that would be portable but I'm not familiar with tach's for two stroke engines so I'm not sure where to start.

Yep Paul..I think everybody who owns an outboard with no instruments should have one in thier pocket or mounted. They don't have to be mounted..cute little boogers...(I got one..) ONe wire to engine. splits to hand wrap plug wire and one to ground(add alligator clip for ground if using as portable)
