Re: Retarded Timing

Hey thanks for the reply Whoohoo, yeah when I move the dist pulley a tooth from Belt Alignment Mark on flywheel I get 3 BTDC. Is that "NEUTRAL IDLE" or "FORWARD IDLE"?? Thanks again. Do you have the proper plastic timing indicator?

Re: Retarded Timing

Neutral Idle, I don't have plastic so I had to find top dead center and used a coat hanger to point at it then determined every thing else was correct.

Re: Retarded Timing

wow never seen a motor torn apart and rebuilt so much except for the indianapolis 500 cars that are rebuilt after every race. You should fit in with those guys real good. For out boards you need to apply for the guiness records man - hehehehe. You have more nerve than I have so far, I've done everything else besides tearing down my power head.

Re: Retarded Timing

Yeah well if you check my other posts you'll find one about my dropping it 3 feet actually 4. I'm starting to think that the crank is bent at the lower main throw between 2 and 3, This is where I'm always having trouble and although I'm rebuilding it again, I'm not too concerned if it is. I'll need a new crank, but for that kind of money, I'd just get another powerhead, or whole motor for that point. Almost time to park for winter anyhoo If it blows, it blows. Thanks for the help

Re: Retarded Timing

If anything is not in balance it will cause the whole system to vibrate in ways that it was not designed to and it will definately kill it fast.

Re: Retarded Timing

So yeah, maybe balance is the thing. I'm appealing to anyone who may have some insight to this problem of mine. This lower reed cage thing is very discouraging. I'm now at the point where the area around where the locating pin sits in the crankcase is broken away, there's still a hole but it's way sloppy, as is the two half moons that make the locating pin hole when the two halves of the reed block are assembled. JB weld seems not strong enough and although I've got permatex cold weld there now,I fill the hole then redrill the locating pin hole, it seems like it won't hold. Any suggestions short of rewelding
crankcase and reed cages. I'd like to get this thing together to sit for the winter anyway.
Thanks

Re: Retarded Timing

Ok Daddy, After having my prop adjusted I've now went back and reset my max advance to 21 btdc when I was finished I fired it up and rechecked my timing mark at idle (900 rpms out of gear) and the mark showed 0 btdc.

Re: Retarded Timing

Sorry DAD, Been real busy here helping people after the storm cutting trees down and up (hehehe) seriously, then my internet computers both went down so I had to fix them. I'm using a Quick Silver tack and wiring harness that hooks right up to the three prong plug on my outboard controls. Sorry It took so long to be able to get back too yaas.
