this is from a website i have seen, so far this is what i have.
80 Mercury ~USED~ Clean Motor with Late Model Ignition (No Dist)
Hyd (Internal) Trim, New Ignition (Switch Box)
with Rebuilt Carbs and New Water Pump.
i know that it is a inline 4 cylinder. but thats it, what years were these made like this, anybody have any idea?

i currently have a 1976 merc 1150 115 inline 6, is this basically the same motor, minus 2 cylinders?

i love my merc 1150, but its just too big, hence why i am selling it on ebay today!

edit

You're asking the wrong guys, PMM.

Ask the guy who posted the ad.

And please don't post links to your ads here.

Re: please describe this mercry 80hp

78 thru 83

Mercury switched the 4 cylinder to distributorless ignition during the 1974 production run. At the time the motor was called the Merc 850(85hp)

and yes it is basiclly 2/3 of your 115, Mercury was known to use only 3 different Bore/stroke combinations and just added cylinders.
Examples:
2 cylinder 20hp 22cu.in. 4 cylinder 50hp 44cu.in. block. both used same bore and stroke

2 cylinder 40hp 33.3cu.in., 3 cylinder 65/70 hp 49.6cu.in., 4 cylinder 75/80/85hp 66.6cu.in., inline 6 90/115/135/140/150hp 99.8cu.in. all used same bore stroke

Are you SURE it's a 4-cyl? I didn't know that any of the 80 HP motors had the integral (what was described as 'internal') power T&T. Thought they all had external PT&T rams. Unless it's a very late 80's model.

Of course by the late '80's you had an 80 HP 3-cyl if I'm not mistaken.

A ser # would tell all, of course.

PMM,

3 pot 80's ran 1987-1989 (serial number from 0A966142 to 0C221499) with integal PTT. 4 pot 80's ran 1969-1972 (serial numbers from 2559001 to 3493912) then 1978-1983 (serial numbers from 4831999 to 6432900).

Only from 1980 (starting serial number 5582562) were they offered with PTT, and that would have been the external pump amd rams. The displacement of the 3 cyl model was 71.12 cu in (bore=3.375in and stroke=2.65in). The engine, with PTT option, weighs 280lbs.

Your engine's displacement is 99.8 cu in (bore=2.875in, stroke=2.564in) and weighs 290lbs. The 4 cyl 80 is 66.6 cu in with the same bore and stroke and weighs 244 lbs.

So, you can see that to go to the 3 cyl 80 is only going to save you 10lbs, the 4 cyl is only 46lbs lighter. Heck, I catch fish bigger than that.

Is it worth the pain? Does you engine run good? One thing I do know about the later 4 cyl 80's is that they are difficult to get to idle properly. They were released when the emission regulations were being changed and Merc had to make last minute changes that didn't really work well on that engine.

Just my 0.02

C..............

Re: please describe this mercry 80hp

chris, that info is priceless. thank you.

when i said my motor was too big, well its much too much hp for this boat. its almost scarey, and i have the family( 2 kids) out at least twice a week. it came with a 55 and i had an 80 on it for a while and really liked the way it performed.

besides, the shop that has this motor for sale, i have 800 and sum odd dollars of credit at their shop from another transaction earlier this year.

the tilt and trim looked really apealing, and i already have the boat set for a merc... although i have no quarels about a omc or import. i really liked the suzuki it came with.

we'll just hafta see what happens, but thanks for all the great info, guys.

mike
