I have a 1971 merc 50hp 500 and took it out today for the first time. Changed the lower unit oil and gaskets, changed the plugs, fixed a few wires here and there... and drained fuel tank. Got out on the water and it ran great! Not peeing too much water at all though, and water that was trickling out was HOT! Heading back for the launch, stalled out. Started again, but was only able to idle back to the dock. Does stalling out have to do with overheating? Also what has to be replaced? The impeller or a pump, or possibly something else? Any help appreciated

BigFish7:
If you are getting low water pressure out of the "Pee Hole", it sounds like you should replace the impeller in the water pump. Some of the more experienced guys should be able to help you if you run into problems.
As for the overheating. If an engine, any engine for that mater, shuts down and you suspect overheating, you should always let it cool BEFORE trying to restart. Many an engine has died that way. Unfoirtunatly, I learned that leason the hard way several years ago. But, if you were able to idle back to the dock, you should be fine. (Anybody with more experience out thee that can confirm this?)

Good luck and good fishing.

Do more than just the impeller, change the whole pump. Not hard to do. If you don't have a manual, consider the Seloc. Or you can run a Search on Merc 500 water pump/impeller here and get good instructions on how its done. I know...I was the one getting the instructions.
