i am looking at 2 boats this weekend and i need some help choosing. My budget dictates aluminum right now. I am looking at 2 used Mirrocraft aluminum boats. One is 14 feet and the other is 16 feet. I think both of them are semi v hulls from the 1990's. I would be using my boat on the many ponds, bays and Nrth River near me. I don't know if i will attempt to go chase the cod outside the bay when they come close to shore. I have a small 12 foot aluminum to use on the small ponds here and i will be keeping that. I have not run the motors yet and will do so before making my final decision. As far as price is concerned the 16 foot boat will be 500-600 more than the 14 foot boat. Bioth boats have been used mainly in fresh water but have seen the salt too.

The 14 foot boat comes with a nice looking 35 hp Johnson that owner claims is dealer maintained. It comes with more stuff and a better trailer. It is clearly in better shape. i will need to do nothing to this boat. The trailer is very nice too.

The 16 footer is dirty. It should clean up nice. needs some wood replaced and has a 25 horse Johnson. Trailer is a bit rusty but ok.

Before running the engines, I am leaning to the 14 footer because of appearance. But should i choose the 16 footer becasue it is bigger. What are the advantages of 2 more feet. Will it be that more stable if i try to go outside the bay with this boat. I dont think the 16 footer will have any problems i cannot address as far as mainenance goes.

any feedback appreciated. I know a lot of you guys will tell me that i should go with fiberglass but that is not an option for the budget right now. Maybe my next boat..

thanks,

John

The difference between the 12'er you have Now,+ the 14'er will be Minimal,.......

I'd go with the 16'er,...... It'll be Noticeably Bigger,+ More Stable.........

bondo,

the 12 footer is actually a 11'6 and has very low transom. I use a 3 hp shortshaft on it. and evry time i move i feel it. 14 footer would be an upgrade but if the 16 footer gives me that much more then that woud be the way to go. the 35 hp on the 14 was attractive too but i think the 25 will push the 16 well enough.

thanks,

John

Get 'em both, switch motors and sell the 14'er.

jaxson,, i will check the width, that is a great point. If they are they same would the stability be the same......

calico, that is not such a crazy idea. the 14 is cheap enough that i would make money on the deal... if i can talk the 16 down enough i will do it. however divorce is expensive.

well,

i drove passed the 16'er and the owner was out there and he ran the motor for me. he threw in a fishfinder and bowmount trolling motor and i had to take it. On second glance the boat was in pretty good shape. I figure the 25 hp will push it well enough. Thanks for all the help. I was really thinking about the 14 footer....

When you do venture out into the in-shore areas, you will be glad you have the extra 2' in length. You'll be glad in any chop.

Your 16 should plane easier just because of its length. It may stay on plane easier as well. And that bigger footprint will plane with extra weight easier.

why did you give up on the idea of buying both, switching motors, and reselling the 14' boat?

Seriously, was it the wife, even though you could likely make money on the deal?

well, we need a new fridge and some work done on the house. I just cannot justify it. He was down to 1000 for that 14 footer. Not a bad deal around here. In the spring do you think i could have sold it for more. It was in very nice shape.I had the new boat out today and it was scary fast. Planes up real fast. The 25 will be fine. There are better investments than boats and yes the wife would have killed me too.

Anyway the motor ran great and i am very happy with the boat. I had it on the little pond down the road. Now I am anxious to take it out to The big lake down the road or even Duxbury bay for some fall striper fishing.
