So let me understand this. If it's a Grady with a rotten transom (known problem) or a Parker with a rotting deck (known problem) or one of the myriad of other brands with their problems we should bash them, correct? That certainly doesn't seem to be the case.

Bayliner bashing is fun for a lot of people. It justifies the reason they spent a lot of money. A Grady Adventure 208 setup like my Trophy costs $20K more. I'll keep the $20K, invest it and when it comes time to sell I won't care what I get cause I'll have the full price in my hand already, thank you. Yes, the fit and finish appears better on the Grady. Only time will tell if it will last longer. I only had one problem with her this whole first season...a missing clip to secure the bottom of the back curtain.

I've no complaint with my ride in the rough stuff. On top of that $20K gives me a lot of goodies for the boat as well as a lifetime of fuel (though the oil companies are trying to take that one away - lol).

Bash away folks and keep the prices low. But Bayliner still sells more boats than most manufacturers. They put a lot of people on the water at a reasonable price who would not be able to enjoy the water otherwise. They serve their purpose. Yes, the small, entry level boats are just that. The larger boats are much better made. But a nice, young family of four looking to get on the water without risking the new house will not find a better value.

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

As one can tell from my log-on name, I used to own a bayliner (Trophy). I wish I could change that log-on name, but not because I am ashamed of once owning a Bayliner. It was a good boat for the money.
It's nice to be back with this forum. I've been reading (lurking) a little bit since the storm duty has been letting up a little.
Gregintexas, Bayliner bashing is just something that people do to get things stirred up. Kind of like asking a question on outboard motor oil.
If you're happy with your boat, enjoy it.

I'm with Strat and Mole.
I don't own one but I would certainly buy one regardless of what other people think. Everyone has an opinion on 'stuff'. The Bayliner bashing is based on the 70's boats that they pumped out by the hundreds of thousands. They weren't the best but they weren't the worst... and they were inexpensive. Everybody and their dog bought one and a lot of them weren't looked after as well as they should've been. So there is thousands of them out there falling apart but more in fine condition. That isn't a good indication of what they are from the 80's-ish on. Make no mistake, there are better boats out there... lots of them but for the money, Bayliners are pretty good. That would explain why they've sold as many boats as they have.
I'm not 100% sure of what drive that is but those Cobra drives are ok too. My bud has a hot rod 460 in front of his in a 75 mph boat and it's been trouble free for years. The key is maintenance... no matter what boat you're talking about. Enjoy your Bayliner dude!

From someone that has owned a Bayliner in the past and now owns a Grady don't kid yourself.

There is no comparison between the two boats when it comes to the quality, ride and resale value.

Don't get me wrong, for those just starting out or on a limited budget a Trophy makes perfectly good sense. But trying to compare a Bayliner to a Grady is like trying to compare a Saturn Neon to a Mercedes 450SEL.

The Saturn has sold a lot of cars and their owners will tell you what a great car they are but the Saturn will never be a Mercedes in it's wildest dreams

lol you can also compare a ford taurus to a Lincoln continental and say the are not in the same league.

They use identical parts and just charge more for the lincoln parts.

I like my bayliner. I'm boating where I otherwise wouldnt have been.

Actually the Continental and the Crown Vic shared a common platform but thats neither here nor there... :)

Bayliner bashing is a time honored tradition. It is based on those who have purchased used bayliners and found them to be less than adequate. The boats under 25 feet built in the 80s to early 90s were the worst, they build quality was low. Shoddy worksmanship combined with poor care by the original owners resulted in boats that fell out of repair quickly. They can be good boats, they ride good and look good, they just didn't hold up to long term abuse and negligence. I myself still would like to find a 90s Capri for nothing or dirt cheap and rebuild it to what it should be, they are good looking boats.

Well dingbat, I don't have to spend $20K more for a GW Adventure 208 outfitted like mine only to have this problem in 10 years or less. Make sure to read all three pages.

Grady Transom Problem

Say what you may. Spending more money doesn't guarantee you're getting a better boat. A lot of it is perception - smoke and mirrors. Just look at how many people have replied that they've seen the same problem with GWs. And look at how many who are in the know agree that the damage is as described.

Oh, brother. Yeah, truth and facts like the Grady transom problem. Like the well-documented Sea Ray corner-cutting and Albemarle hull flexing (see the pics and narratives for both on yachtsurvey.com). Like the near-new Cobalt and Formula boats I just read about on BoatUS with torsion stress cracking near the chines and below the windshield.

All boats have their issues, none are immune. Even so-called high end boats that cost disproportionally more than 'mainstream', 'entry level' or 'value' boats.

I keep a trap at the back end of my boat when I leave it in the water for that very sole reason! :p

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

I am not sure but I have a buddy that won't step foot on a Bayliner other than a ride in the bay! He has always said they a cheaply made and seem to have the hulls split for no reason. He use to work in a Marina. Says they do the Bayliner death roll when they sink. Funny thing is he got to see this last week. The guy down the creek from him bought a new Bayliner 89,000.00 bucks lasted 2 weeks it did the bayliner roll right at the dock in 4 feet of water. What a mess I got to see it the next day. Flipped right over at the dock. We now know why it did it. The bildge pump hose was never hose clamped to the outlet and fell off. He filled the boat with gas and this left the outlet very close to the water line. As it rained the pump just pumped it back in the bildge the outlet reached the water enought said. But it didn't sink like most boats would have. Straight down to the bottom. it did that famous roll they do so well. I am thinking they are so boyant they won't sink so the roll?

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

1. Bayliner hulls do not split for no reason. Period.
2. "They" do a death roll "when they sink"? Bayliners do not do a "death roll" or "sink" any more or less than any other boat, with the possible exception of Boston Whaler, which is chock full of flotation foam.
3. Go to yachtsurvey.com and read some of Mr Pascoe's reviews. You'll see that no boat is immune from mistakes in both design and manufacture.

Wondering why we don't read about all these sinking Bayliners or why you can't find them on the web?

Because it's an urban legend. And anyone who falls for it hasn't done their homework.

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

I have a 27' Ciera. the boats a 1986 and is in excellent shape. I taker her in the Ocean regularly, the rougher the better. I havnt had any issues that no other boater I know has had.
There are quite a few brands of boats at the marina where mine is docked and they all have the same every day issues as any one else.
I also just purchased a 26' formula and I dont see any difference between the two boats.
The Bayliner isnt as fast and doesnt handel like a speed cruiser but its not what it is.
Infact I recently decided the boat that will be for sale is the Formula. The Bayliner is more comfortable and I think rides better in rougher seas.

Don Aronow must be rolling over in his grave after that statement.
