70hp Merc 3 Cyl serial # 0A739874 - 1987

How hard is it to replace/upgrade the stator and rectifier on this motor? It died last week (no spark) and the tech guy says he has about 1.5 hours into testing it and pulling the flywheel. He says it needs to be upgraded to a newer part number. Red stator as opposed to black stator. Also the rectifier is blown - I've seen an irregular tach problem the last few times out.
He's quoted me 3 more hours and about $400 in parts (Canadian dollars). I'm thinking of doing it myself now that the flywheel is off. I'm good with mechanical stuff but the electrical makes me nervious... Is it re and re or is there more to it?

Please help, I need to phone him back tomorrow AM.

Thanks,
Grant

Re: Stator/Rectifier - HELP!

Get a "red" stator and rectifier/regulator CDI #194-5279 from:
http://www.seilermarine.com/rapair/mercury.htm
better than original merc. Rec/reg will have to be fit under hood as it will not fit where standard rec goes but will do a better job charging the battery.

The kit is simple enough to replace providing you follow the instructions.

Its not just remove and refit as the stator is wired differently to your old one.

There is only 1 trigger wire that goes to the switchbox, you have a seperate 'stator adaptor' that you have to fit. You have to replace your exisitng rectifier with the one supplied and then wire up the new voltage regulator supplied in the kit.

Took me a couple of hours to fit, gives you a higher charging output than your existing one (hench the need for a regulator) and a smoother idle, and will be more reliable as the new red stator has extra lamination to prevent water ingress

Re: Stator/Rectifier - HELP!

The replacement time quoted seems about right, especially if it's to be water tested. The diag. time seems a bit excessive--takes about 1/2 hour to test ignition and pop a flywheel. But there could have been some corrosion involved. Both the red stator and the CDI unit need to be clocked correctly under the flywheel--the Mercury unit is labeled. Whether or not you should attempt it would depend on how much you understand about the function of the componants and if you own the special tools required to hold and re-torque the flywheel.
