Bad Rectifier, Tach Problem, Stator Question

Hello Everyone. Motor is an '80 inline 140HP. My Tach does not work, and I have verified that my rectifier is bad. I disconnected the rectifier and kept the tach connected to the yellow stator wire and the tach still does not work. Could the bad rectifier have blown the tach? Could the bad rectifier have damaged my stator(yellow leads only)? Motor still runs like a champ.

Does anyone know what the ohm reading should be on the yellow leads of the stator? Also, what is the AC output on the yellow leads at idle speed?

Thanks, CG

just install a new $35 rectifier and re-test tach.
if she's running well don't worry about stator.

Re: Bad Rectifier, Tach Problem, Stator Question

Replacing the rectifier is a given, but it is not needed to test the tach, right? The rectifier is only needed to charge the battery. I would like to determine if it is the tach or not before I go to buy all the parts I plan on getting.

Thanks, CG

You need to DVA check the charge coil on the stator. See if this chart helps you. Make shure to look at the notes...
web page

tach works off DC from rectifier, will need to
replace then test tach.
good luck,
M.Y.

M.Y. - I thought the tach hooked to the stator side of the rectifier which is the AC current signal from the stator. How does it get a DC signal from that connection? Sounds conflicting?

better yet, get a 3 dollar rectifier from radioshack.com . its a 25 amp full wave bridge rectifier. i run one on my merc 1150. here is the link so you know what im talking bout.it actually better than stock, charges faster! and only 3 bucks

radio shack rectifier

Re: Bad Rectifier, Tach Problem, Stator Question

Trent, thank you for the chart.

The tach is definately connected to one of the AC poles of the rectifier. The battery is connected to the + pole for charging and that is the only function of the rectifier. This is good because I can remove one variable from the problem and test the other two remaining pieces.

phatmanmike, I think I will buy the Radio Shack rectifier instead. I saw that in one of your past threads when I was searching for info. Radio Shack is one of the few businesses in this rather small town.

Thank You to everyone for the help. I will post results once I get it all figured out. It may be spring though, winterizing this weekend.

CG

Re: Bad Rectifier, Tach Problem, Stator Question

Hey guys, finally got everything fixed so I wanted to let you know the final outcome. It turned out that the brown tach wire and the red charging wire were shorted together inside the motor wiring harness. That's probably what blew the recifier to begin with. I replaced wiring harness and the rectifier(from radio shack) and everthing is working properly now. Battery charges and the tach works again.

Thanks,
CG
