50 merc questions

i have just bought a 1980/81 50 hp merc with thunderbolt ignition a few questions it does not have electric start is it possible to fit a start system if so what is involved, it has no charge system is it possible to fit and again what is involved thanks

Yes you can install electric start But would have to change the stator and add a rectifer for a charging system best bet would to try to find a engine on the bone pile and strip the electical parts you need for the job new parts would be pricey--good luck bob

thanks would i only be able to use parts form 50hp or would 40 60 etc be any good and would they have to be from the same year

the stator no. is 398-5454 and fits 40 hp 4cyl. 89-91--- 50 hp electric start 76-91 3 or 4 cyl.---60 hp 3 cyl 84-90---65 hp 3 cyl. 76-79---70 hp. 3cyl. 77 to 87--- 75hp. 4 cyl. 84to88 80hp.4 cyl.78to83---hope this helps, the rectifer is the same also but differant starter on all but the 4 cyl. 40-45-50 engines --bob

cheers that should help me out, so i need the exact starter what about wiring or can i make my own loom

Try ot salvage one off an old engine it would be easier but if you are capable you can make one just do it in a workman like manner--bob
