Hello all

I'm working on a 1967, 9.8hp Mercury with shifting problems. I've got most of it apart except for the forward gear. The book I have said to bang it on a piece of wood and the gear should drop out. Well it aint coming out. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Radar,
Try a little heat on the aluminum housing using a propane torch. The aluminum will expand more than the steel of the bearing that holds the forward gear and it SHOULD simply drop out. No guarantees, though...
- Scott

Radar,

Do you have the drive shaft and pinion gear out? This has to happen first.

After that what you have done should have the bearing on your bench.

You don't mean the bearing race do you?

DHP

The 11-cube twins don't use a tapered bearing on the forward gear, so the race wouldn't be left behind unless the bearing was REALLY bad.
- Scott

Re: 67 Mercury 9.8hp lower unit problem

Hey Chinewalker, the heat treatment worked. The gear and bearing came out after a few more bangs on the bench. As I checked out all the lower unit parts, I think I came across something I need to replace. Is the cross pin suppose to go all the way through the prop shaft to the other side of the clutch? This one goes about 1/4 of the way through and it looks like it did break off. If it does need replace, is this something I can get locally or will I need to go to a dealer?

Thanks again

Hi Radar,
Yes, the pin is supposed to be one piece, all the way through. I would think you should be able to get this part from a dealer - take the pieces of the old one with you to help match it up. Lacking that, get creative - a piece of drill rod might work in a pinch. I don't think you'd want to use anything too soft (like a nail) as it shouldn't be able to bend very easily.
- Scott
