Thunderbolt ignition trigger

Hi guys,

I have a problem with a 1970ish 650SS. I did a carb strip and clean at the beach the other day and forgot to re-connect the main battery ground wire to the engine block after re-assembling the unit. It re-started OK (the wire must have been touching the frame) and ran OK for about 5 minutes then died - never to re-start. There was no spark at all on any plug. I thought I must have fried the control box but I'm now not so sure. I checked the connections and disconnected the mercury tilt switch. I had left the ignition switched on at this point and noticed a healthy spark if I moved the (now loose) brown trigger wire connection around. This implies to me that the box is OK - it's producing a spark. I then tried measuring the trigger coil and discovered no resistance on both coils.

My questions are:

Is the trigger actually a coil or maybe an opto coupler?

If it is a coil what resistance should it have?

Re: Thunderbolt ignition trigger

It's not opto. If you eliminate the switchbox as the problem it almost has to be the trigger.

-W
