I have the carbs apart right now.....and i soaked the bowl and float and all the other stuff in decarbing fluid to get all the varnish off...

The clymers manual says to rinse with water and then soak in solvent before reassembly... What's a good solvent?

Gasoline?
Kerosene?

Thanks!

I just spray them off and into all the orifices with spray carb cleaner to "rinse" them. Great solvent it is. Then just let dry for a while.

-W

Being that there was a HUGE amount of vernish in the bowls and at the top by the needle, you think this is what was causing my problem running it at idle? Bw - i dissasembled the fuel pump and it was clean as a whistle..

I would replace the float valve assemblies if they are available, then you know that part is clean.

what part is the valve assembly? The tube that goes through the float with the pin in the middle? (Otherwise known as the part thats really hard to clean with a toothbrush)

That was likely your biggest problem, gunk in the carbs. Did you get a new needle and seat for each carb or a complete rebuild kits? As Clams mentioned get a can of the aeresol carb cleaner and spray the heck out of it. In fact I'm on my way to get some to clean carbs on the wifes snowmachine,if it's not the boat its the snowmachines. Spray it in every orfice on the carb. What did the air/mixture screw tips look like when you pulled them?

I didnt replace anything or buy any kit... i just cleaned the hell out of it.

I bouth the aeresol carb cleaner, sprayed the hell out of it... Then took an old toothbrush and scrubbed the hell out of it with the carb cleaner on the brush... Everything in the carb is sparkling clean now...

The needle's looked very clean in there, but the housing of the body it sat in was very yellow/varnished looking... i soaked it in carb cleaner for a while, toohbrush scrubbed, and now they are all sitting in carb cleaner again.

Do you think this is enough?

After all the soaking it is a good idea to blow them out with high pressure compressed air.

SoLittle - My manual suggested that as well... I have everything soaking in a ventilated part of my garage right now, and they will be overnight, and i will take my compressor and blow everything out first thing tommorow morning...

Hopefully this fixes everything and i can begin to winterize :p

I hope the gaskets are in good shape still. Let it soak over night if you can. I would check with the Mercury house and get the rebuild kits or assorted parts and gaskets while they are soaking. Your this far, may as well go all the way. You should see what I found in the carb bowls of the wifes snowmachine, green scalley crap, with a bubble or two of water. That is what sta-bil prevents and I'm an idiot for not using it.

I did the carb gasket kit and needle and seat kit, cleaned out everything in the carbs (it had clogs all over the place) & blew it out with compressed air.

Got everything back on the motor, and i have the same problem. it sounds like its missing, and it stalls after a couple seconds, and still has alot of white smoke...

Anything else that could be causing this?????

Little more info never hurts...
Year and model of motor?
How long did it sit?
Did it run well before being put up?

I rebuilt my carbs recently and found the gasket sets here on this site, 'bout $4 per carb. Other parts available as well. Folks here will be happy to help, just give them a chance (and some info to work with)

Sorry, I thought this was the thread that had all the previous info about the motor.

Its a 1993 60HP Oil injected Merc. (S/N OD204109)
It sat for about 5 years, non-winterized (my grandfather died, I inherited the boat)
It did run well, when he was alive, about 7 years ago.

And i did the gasket kit, the entire carb rebuld kit, measured the space between the body and float, decarbed and cleaned with a toothbrush and let sit in decarbing fluid for 36 hours... I mean, these carbs are as good as new. I have the mixture screws 1 1/4 out from all in.

Also put in new plugs, and also put about a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder and moved the flywheel from hand to lube up the insides after sitting so long... runs fine on medium/high idle in neutral with prime on...
But the second prime is off it seems lik its missing and dies.

Please help :)

sounds like and looks like one or more of the carbs may be flooding.

how are your floats adjusted. remeber that too much fuel will also make smoke, and if its flooding out, that would explain why it stalls after a few seconds each time, at the same time interval!

out
mike

I measured them and they looked 7/16 from the body of the carb to the float... And in the carb kit i replaced the little needle thingy that connects to the carb from the float.

OK... just looking at the WME carb diagram, i realize the one place i didnt clean is where the inlet valve goes... if this is clogged the carb will flood, correct?

I didnt really realize how the carb worked, so i overlooked this.
