I was going to replace the water pump and thermostat in my 1999 25 hp outboard this year. Do you think the sierra parts are equal to or Better than the Mercury parts. It has worked fine for 5 years with the Mercury parts. thanks

Re: sierra or Mercury parts?

Many parts are outsourced on Mercs. Other companies can buy them as well. There may well be components in that Sierra kit that are from the same source as those in a Mercury kit. But either way, like Clams said. They seem to work just fine. Sierra parts in general are good. I'm not too confident about their gears however.

One thing about the Merc kits you should consider. They are guaranteed for a year. If that pump fails due to a defect and cooks the powerhead, they'll cover it powerhead and all. Sierra is a good company and I'm sure they would as well, but I'm sure there are more hoops to jump through to get it handled. With OEM parts, you kinda skip the middleman.

hello
on merc parts I am with willy and clams.
on the cooling systems I have found sierra to be better than most merc oem. the sierra t-stats are normally self flushing.
on the electrical sierra gives a full year warrenty and I think merc gives 90 days.
I have never had any problems with sierra warrenty. and we did have some gear hardness warrenty issues in the mid-late ninties.
good luck and keep posting

Re: sierra or Mercury parts?

I just replaced the water pump on my merc with a sierra kit. I am very pleased with the impeller and pump itself. However, Im not real happy with the gaskets. The thin ring aournd the bottom gasket was so skinny it was fragile... I tore it before I hardly got started!!! I went to carquest and bought a role of gasket material that seems to be a little tougher and has an adhesive backing (very handy!) It worked much better!!! It's real easy to make your own gaskets with an exacto knife.

I also bought carb gasket kits. My 40 hp carbs only really have the one ring gasket aroung the float cup. The sierra gasket was too wide to fit in the slot... I put the original back in (it wasn't in bad shape) and accepted the fact I wasted $12 on two gasket kits.

I haven't gotten any merc replacement parts so I can't compare, but that's been my experience.
