Anyone ever tested the temperature switch while it was mounted on the head? (with a heat gun or some artificial means of heat applied)

If not, what is the best method in your opinion?

if you have a termo by it so you know the temp is right should do the trick or just run it till you get to the temp you want if it runs

Re: Overheat Temp Switch - Testing it?

Interesting question. I don't think mine has ever worked correct, as my temp guage never seems to go over 110 degrees. I can hold my hand on the heads and they really do not feel all that hot at top near the thermostats.I think this is the one on the port bank of the head, near the top. The overheat sender works as I have been in kelp and have it go off if I suck some over the intakes and it did go off the last time I had an impeller failure.

I'd think you'd have to pull it off.

Then you could put it in a pan of water and heat it up. Check with a mulit-meter for when it opens/closes.

If it actuates above 212, put a little anti-freeze in the water to raise the boiling point, and watch it with a thermometer. A oven thermometer should work in a pinch, it goes up plenty high. If you dry it out when you're done that shouldn't kill it.

**
I try to wait until the wife is gone for doing such things in the kitchen,,,, especially running engine parts in the dishwasher. (just a little helpful advice from Uncle Ed.) *chuckle*

In the old days we used heat sticks to determine the temp like rubbing to sticks together these days ,dishwasher I like that one!

You Guys must either be upwardly mobile or live in nice neighbourhoods. My wife still washes my engine parts by hand.

Keith B....

dang
an animal trainer he is :)
on a V merc its just to easy to remove the t-stats for testing. I rarely test them unless I think its stuck shut and rarely ever reuse them. they are just to cheap. toss them out every year or so and replace them.
if I suspect it was stuck shut I will heat them in a pan of water with a candy thermometer to see if I am correct but I dont reuse them.
