I have what i beleive is a 1976 model 40hp 2cyl Mariner. The serial numbers start with 676 that is why I think it is a 76. Anyway didnt have time to work on this took it to a so called certified mechanic and he gave it back to me ina box. After some heated screaming I got my boat and motor back with the new set of points that I wanted installed in this motor and after 2 weeks of waiting got a phone call saying come get it. As stated it was in a box and he told me that it had toomuch crankshat endplay. I personally checked it and the endlpay maybe a strong 1/8 inch at the most 3/32.That when he told me that he didnt want to go any further as it wasnt "new enough for him to work on. Anyway has anyone ever dealt with too much endplay and what would be the correct measures to fix this. The motor was running VERY strong till the points burned up. I tink I could install the points tape up the cut wires he cut and go for it what is ya'lls opinion???

I doubt it's a 1976. That's just a model number prefix. Sounds like an awful lot of endplay, but if it worked before it should work again. As far as getting rid of the endplay, that's major and probably not worth digging into. At this point you have nothing to lose by putting it back together and seeing what you still have.

Your Mariner 40 twin would actually be a Yamaha.

Good heavens blackanchor, I thought I had a lot of motors. No mercs at this time tho. But considering Mercury's stellar record in reliability (cough wheeze puke), you probaly need all of them to find one that actually works at any one given time. ;)

hahahaha
yep what willy says :)
fastes thing on race day if it starts.
if you have any noticable endplay( up and down) the bottom bearing is failing fast. you have 2 choices, run it till it pukes or replace the bearings. I dont think yamaha made any 40 hp motors with points.

Your 76 2 cylinder IS a Mercury product, Mercury's very first looper....later derated to 35 HP because it was power head rated, VERY good little engine. You need to buy a service manual for about 35 bucks.....

Re: To much crankshaft endplay????

Flyboy I found out that my Mariner is a yamaha engine. It has points and was made in japan. Still dont know what year it is (trying to find a site that lists the serial numbers so I can find out exactly what year a couple of my motors are such as the Mariner in question and also (shhhhhh.....dont tell know one a Johnson I have..LOL). I found the Mercury site that tells me what the years are by serial numbers. Anyway sorry bout rambling on get me talking bout boats and motors and I can go on for ALONG time LOL. Does anyone know a site that I can figure out what year this motor is (I gotta manual Seloc) and it doesnt list the years by serial number and also does anyone know where I might find resonable parts for this motor as NO way am I gonna Deep Six this motor as it really does FLY. Thanks guys for the help and hope you can help me a little more.

Re: To much crankshaft endplay????

LOL....No Dhadley....but it took Merc engineering to get that SLOMC to do it. LOL..as as I stated 99.9%. Even SLOMC's can have a good day. Remember I am just picking (grrrrr @ OMC's always in my way and I'm only at half throttle). I figure they oughta have a lane for SLOMC's like the highways do you know the sign says slower vehicles stay right so MERCS can go ahead and air it out. LMBO....Have a great day pushing your barge with a SLOMC.

Interesting -- what part of that Johnson was engineered by Merc?

Re: To much crankshaft endplay????

wish I had a nickel for every black anchor I towed in with my poor jonnyrude :)
OMC did have some issues with the first 2 years of vro, merc still has issues with the suberbly engineered nylon drive gear and we are not even getting into stator/switcbox/idlestabilizers:) :) .

Re: To much crankshaft endplay????

LMBO.... I was just joking and bout the MERC engineering under the johnson. OK I'll come clean it was all OMC that won the outboard drag racing championship (whew that was hard to say but I did). And I'll also add that if you want a dependable reliable outboard OMC is probably the way to go. They have really done there homework on making there engines live long. But I'll also add once you het that MERC fired up after all its coughing and sneezing you better watch out cause here we come. What it all boils down to in my opinion what its worth is personal preference. I have had both manufacturers engines and had complaints about both. My preference is MERC when it comes to speed, when it comes to reliability I'll choose OMC. Ya'll have a great day and I'll cya in my prop wash.
1FASTLASER with a MERC I might add
