Hi
I just got a blueband Mercury 65 hp to play with! I'll post the serial number tomorrow, but it's the one with the plastic, square shaped cowling.

The previous owner says that it was a good runner, but the ignition switch failed and he replaced it with an automotive switch! I know that's a bad move, and he did burn some wiring inside the control box.

What I need to know is, could he have damaged any of the electrical parts under the cowling, ie, coils, rectifier, etc? I've had a quick look, and all the wiring under there looks O.K and I can't see anything that is obviously burned.

Thanks
Steve

Where is the switch box? Is it the actual key switch inside the control box, or is it one of the electric components under the hood?

Thanks
Steve

It is the Ign. Box that is on the side of the motor the wires from the coils and the wires from the stator under the flywheel attach to it, Itis heart of the system and tells the ign. when to fire.

Oh I see, it's the powerpack. I was afraid of that, it'll be an expensive repair. Wouldn't anything else blow before the powerpack? I know on the OMC's that if you hook the battery up the wrong way, it'll burn out the rectifier pretty quick, but the powerpaqck usually survives. I'm not very familiar with Merc's though.

Any further info would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Steve

That the differace between battery powered Ign.(OMC and Mercurys earliest type) and the newer style alt. drived type the earlier type ran on DC voltage and the alt. on AC voltage

So there wouldn't be a fuse in the wiring harness or anything protecting the engines electrics?

Thanks
Steve

O.K, thanks.

So assuming that the powerpack/switchbox is the most likely thing to have been damaged, is there a simple test I can do to find out if it's cooked?

Thanks
Steve
