I was wondering if it is ok to charge my cranking battery while it is hooked up to the engine. I have a 3 bank charger and two go to the trolling batteries and the third is hooked to the cranking battery.I have a 225 efi mercury.I have heard that it can do harm on some model engines.

Re: Charging battery

It is never a good idea to surge any EFI engine with a charge or in jump starting, be safe and disconnect it or install a master switch to turn it off

hunter100,
I don't see you having a problem using the charger on all 3 batteries. It's made to do just that. And it does it at a safe low amperage.

I've never seen a Mercury warning about this,or a service bulletin.

If you put a big service station charger on your charge battery, had the key on,and the terminals were loose, you might do damage.especially if the charge goes to the the engine wires, and not the correded battery.

DHP

Re: Charging battery

I really think laddie is right. A 25-30 dollar battery selector switch is a good choice compared to taking a chance of 100's for repairing any processor controled engine. I don't think they have a three battery selector switch though, so would have to have trolling/deep cycle batteries in parallel or buy another switch. If it's a smartcraft motor, I would definetly advise investing the few dollars. Just my two cents worth.

Hunter 100, I am assuming you have an on board charger and a 24V trolling motor.
