Hi
I have a merc 650 SS i think serial number 2216883. I have a couple of problems with this outboard i hope you can help with. The first problem was that no water was coming from the tell tale so my dad took the bottom leg off to check the water pump impeller and it was fine and after a while decided to put the leg back on but after reasembling the outboard it was stuck in gear and the trottle did not work and still the tell tale had nothing. Do you have any ideas on what could be wrong?

UPDATE : The gear issuse has been fixed thank you.

Hi Fallafalla,
There are many posts on here about aligning the lower unit and shift on Merc units. I'd do a search on the forum and see what turns up. Your motor's unit operates the same as most other Mercs so even if a thread is dealing with another model from the same era, it'll still apply.
Also lots on cooling systems. Is the cooling system clear of blockages? Can you run a hose up the water tube (with the unit off) and get water out the telltale? Even compressed air can tell you if the system is clear (to some degree).
- Scott

Hi thanks for replying i have blown a compressor down the tell tale and when the bottom leg was off we put a hose up the water pipe that goes to engine but nothing came out the tell tale but water did come out another hole in the bottem leg.
Could this be a problem with the gaskets or water jacket?

those older 650s the telltale came from the bottom of the exh. plate and were easyally pluged in some cases they could be changed over to the plug on the top of the watter jacket to stop the problem

If the motor has a themostat (may not) pull it out and see if water exits the opening while at idle... Don't run it for long with the stat removed, do this just to see if you have water flow up to the block..

It may also have a plug in the top of the block that can be removed instead to check in the same way.

Hi i dont think the motor has a thermostat, and could you give a better discription of where the plug in the block is, would it be the bolt just to the left and down from the flyweel when looking from behind.

it's a 1/8 pipe plug and might be hiden under the flywheel sheild at the rear of the engine on the top of the water jacket

Ok i have just started the motor again and i took the bolt out of the top and exaust gases came out but no water. The tell tale still does not work and alot more water water than usual is coming out from the exaust. Is this a problem with gaskets or could the exaust plate have rusted through and if it is either of these problems are they easy to fix. By the way this motor was rebuilt a little while ago and then parked up and left for a long time.

pull the unit and hook a water hose to the water tube to see which end your problem is,it wouldn't be the first unit that was pluged or the water tube wasn't in right
