I have recently purchased a boat with a 1994, 75 hp MARINER motor. Is this a decent outboard/, anything that I should be on the lookout for?, all suggestions would be appreciated as all of my previous boats had inboard deisel engines.
Thanks,
Cap't John

I would bypass oil injection, she's 11 years old faliure rate becomes higher. Change water pump & make sure lower unit seals are in good shape.
Maybe a good decarb..
I have a 1994 40 merc but have heard good things on the 75's as well.

Dont remove the oil injection unless it fails a pulse test. Any marine mech can do this for you. These oil injection systems on Mercs do not fail that often. Not to say they wont though.

Re: 1994, 75 HP MARINER

i have the 1990 version of your motor, and mine is also 90hp . but they are both the same design and motors pretty much, except that your trim actually works( long story)

leave the oil injection alone on these models, they have a variable rate of injection wich is 80:1 at idle and trolling speeds and it increases to 50:1 at WOT. thats excellent science in the works right there ,my fine feathered friend.

these motors are very famous for having a really bad/rough idle, almost to the point that you think its gonna stall, you get used to that after a bit.

they also do not have a choke on the carbs, they have a fuel enrichemnet valve, so when you try to start it, just hold the key in while you turn it and youll be golden.

my motor is on a 16 foot center console with a 12 inch draft, and the damned thing really fly's!!!!!

this motor, even though its gots a rough idle, has ungodly strong mid and upper rpm power. in fact , i have owned over 20 different outboards within the past 18 months( its a sickness, i know) and this one is just plain bad, and thats bad meaning good. it always starts, even after sitting for weeks ata time, and i had the darned thing for 3 months before i found out that it had a fuel enrichment valve. i just turned the key and it started. presto. instant throttle response when going from 1/2 throttle to WOT, just whamm-o and away we go.

i know this is a long post, but i have tons of info that you personally can profit from, and yes, mine is teh mariner also, except i sanded all the paint from the lower unit, so now its kinda silvery looking and bad....bad meaning good.

need any more info and email me directly at phatmanmike@yahoo.com or myoutboards@yahoo.com or spincycle9@hotmail.com

by the way, go t the very very very very very bottom of the page here and click on the link that says repair manuals and get yerself a manual, the best 30 bucks youll ever spend! have a nice day !

Has a variable rate so leave it alone ?
LOL, thats funny ..
Thats part of the problem ...
Lack of proper lubrication @ idle .
But some people may think it's prudent to keep oil injections hooked up still in thier 11, 12 or 15 year old motors ..Guess they never heard of the issues with the plastic drive gears stripping & more.
It's a good idea to bypass these systems after the warranty expires .
Play it safe, peace of mind. :p
