Seized engine?

I took out my fishing boat for a little ride the other day. After about 15 minutes it stopped suddenly. I made attempts to restart it, but the ignition would not turn it over and the flywheel will would not move when I tried to start it manually (the model I have has a pull start as well).

The engine is 25hp Merc outboard. It is less than a year old. The only thing I can think of is that the fuel/oil mixture I was using is almost 2 months old. The propeller is also a little chewed up, but I doubt that would be the cause.

A friend of mine told me my model contains a fuse, but, even if the fuse was blown, I doubt that would jam the flywheel.

Any thoughts? Besides lack of oil, which was not the cause, what else could have caused this? Overheating? (not likely in 15minutes of use) Am I correct in guessing that the engine is seized? If so, should my warranty cover this?

I am rookie at this. . . . I apologize if the answers to my questions are obvious.

Re: Seized engine?

Have you checked your lower unit oil lately, that sounds like a pinion bearing seized, if its low on oil remove the lower unit to see which end seized

Re: Seized engine?

15 minutes will seize an engine if it's not getting water (bad pump or resriction)Pulling the lower unit is a good idea.I also hope the motor wasn't in gear when you tried the recoil starter.

DHP

Re: Seized engine?

Would it more likely be the head or lower half that would seize from no water?

The powerhead will seize from no water. Either end will seize from lack of oil.

I pulled the plugs and they look fine, no rust or white sediment, but it still won't budge.

The very first step is to check your neutral interlock. No reason to pull the lower unit or powerhead if you're trying to start it in forward or the cable/cam is out of adjustment (don't know what your model uses). It could be as simple as a loose fuel hose and you left it in gear after it died.

Re: Seized engine?

Most likely causes, you have already identifed (correctly) are no or low oil and overheating. 15 minutes without cooling WILL sieze a motor, as will even less run time w/o oil. Fuses, etc. have nothing to do with this .. it's solely mechanical (and bad). Siezed LU is also very unlikely, but you can easilyu check the oil level to rule that out.
