I have a 2002 merc 75 hp. Last week i was out a couple of times and it did something weird. The first time I was on my way in for the day and the power just cut in half. I was running about 5k rpms and it cut down to just over 2.

Then a couple days later I went back out to test it out and find out what was wrong and it did it again and was also leaking gas down the housing. I checked and the fuel line was not cracked or leaking.

I called a boat mechanic who said that the float in the carb was probably sticking and the carbs need to be removed and cleaned. He said he could do this, but couldn't get to it til next week... I am in a tourney this weekend and was thinking about trying to do it myself, how difficult would something like this be for a realative beginner.

Howdy, Kevin.

Welcome to iboats. :)

It would be a bit risky without a manual, Kevin, but it could be done.

Not much to lose by trying.

Good luck. :)

hello
try pumping the primer to see if it gets hard. if it does not pump it will listing for fuel flowing past the pump. if you do this with the airbox off you can see if fuel is flowing out the carb throats. if its not and you can still hear it the check/rebuild the fuel pump.
also test the compression and the spark.
always test compression and spark first.

posted 10 February, 2005 11:38 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This maybe of help, I found a perished bleed hose from the carburators which was leaking fuel. As soon as it was replaced the primer bulb felt firmer & the the motor ran like a dream, no more bogging down, full power on acceleration & able to get full throttle again. This problem had been getting worse, probably as the hose let more pressure out until it eventually split, leaking fuel & allowing me to see the problem. Cost a couple of bucks to fix & saved my sanity!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posts: 2 | From: Auckland New Zealand | Registered: Jan 2005 | IP: Logged |

I agree with rod bolt . Pull the plugs hopefully they look good . It sucks to see aluminum stuck to one . If its not spark or compression the rest is easy .Take your time the only thing I can't stress enough is CLEAN clean work space clean tools clean tool lots of light lint free rags lots of clean space . compressed air is a must. It takes me longer to clean my work room than it takes me to rebuild the carbs. A digital camera comes in handy . Once you done it and everything works right you will be smiling like enzyte bob. good luck clean clean clean
