I was on the lake last summer and I was running it wide open. Went back into a cove turned the key off and sat there for a few min and couldnt get it started again. Sprayed ether into the carbs was able to get it to run for a min then it would die....needless to say i got stranded. Where should i start?

I'm a little leary of spraying ether in a two stroke. If you have to spray it I like a mutlti purpose lubricant with a flamable propelent. clean the carbs rebuild the fuel pump.

check the compression first. It's easy and sometimes will save you wasted time .

The compression is 120-125 all the way down until u get to the 5th cyl then it drops to 95 then back up to 120 on the 6th cyl. ... The fuel pump is where the diapraghms are located right??

yes, they are located there. I've just finished rebuilding both of my pumps. Not a hard job. If you pump the primer bulb does it get hard?

So only thing i need to do is replace my diapraghms? Where is the kill switch located and how could i have done it? I spoke to a guy at a boat shop he told me something about reeds are worn out and need to be replaced but he didnt see the motor i explained the situattion. <br />I can get it started with either it will just burn the either out and die.

Have you checked the quality of the fuel you are using? i.e. amount of two stroke and fuel octane (is the fuel old)?<br />The color of the Spark plugs is what will give you the best idea of what is going on especially the one you said was down on compression.<br /><br />Jason

The fuel I used I just had bought from the local truck stop. This thing is harder than heck to start when it was running you had to prime the heck out of it even get it to fire.

ok, i'd be checking everything in your fuel system. Lines, bulb, filter, pumps and carbs. It has to be something in the fuel system.<br />cheers

The whole "reeds are worn out" or "the reed blocks are worn" is just a general purpose metaphor for "I don't know what's wrong so I'm throwing out the most labor intensive and expensive job that can be done."<br /><br />Reed issues will always show up as hard starting and idle issues 1st, and are a "progressive failure" not usually a sudden death experience.<br /><br />Soulds like you have fuel delivery issues.... you have three carbs, 2 pumps, and a fueltank with delivery hose. Work forwards and backwards, and make sure it's all clean and sanitary.<br /><br />-W

Re: 1971 115 Hp Merc Ran- turned off couldnt get it started again

Thanks alot... I got it running i replaced the fuel diaphragms and some fuel lines and got it running. There were two cork washers that i did not install on either of the fuel pumps. Are they needed they were not on there when i removed the fuel pump. I checked all the spark plugs and wires one wire the electrode is missing where it plugs into the spark plug. But my cap isnt like a cap on a car they just snap into it. It is just like a wire that goes up into the cap are these wires made into the cap or how do i reattach this to the cap. It just doesnt look like it would be a good connection if i just took and shoved it back up into the cap itself.
