Hi Im new to the forum, there is some great information here. My question is that...I have a 1962 Mercury 1000 (all black in-line 6) When I tilt the motor up for transport, fuel drips out of all 3 carbs and eventually onto the well. And it does this a little less if I disconnect the fuel line and run the carbs out of gas. I just cant see this being normal, even if it is a old motor. What could be the problem? Note: The previous owner rebuilt the fuel pumps. I have done no work to the powerhead end of the outboard. Also, while starting, it seems excessive fuel flows out the carb throat when the electric choke is engaged. There is some evidence of a previous fire under the cowling, because the rubber gasket for the cowling lock plate is scorched. Other than that, the motor runs great.

thats the way they work if you don't run the fuel out of thr bowls just like tipping a cup over on a 45 degree angle it will spill

Hi laddiesservice, thanks for the reply. Then do you think that the evidence of fire is due to the bowls not being run out of fuel and then the motor was started and fuel ignited?

It's normal. Just admire the pretty colors in the water. :D

-W

Turn the motor all the way to the right, before you tilt it back. This should put the bowls below the throat when it's tilted. Mine will spill out if I tilt it with the motor straight, but not if I turn the motor first. Also, unhook the fuel line before tilting it. The first time I tilted mine after running, luckily it was just a test, on the muffs and not on the water. I had the motor straight and the fuel line hooked up and still pressurized  As the fuel flowed out of the jets, it was being replaced by fresh fuel from the line. Motor got dropped back down in a hurry.
What do you have your motor on? I have a 1963 Merc 1000 hanging on a 1973 Larson XL-5.

as i know it, i wouldnt run the carbs dry evertime you finish using it. 2 stroke, no fuel means no oil, after repeated time it's going to do damage to your motor. cheers

My motor is mounted on an 18' Oceanic closed bow (Redfish By IMP) evidently they took over (IMP) in the late 60's or early 70's. The hull design stayed the same as the Redfish Cuddy. If I could figure out what the heck URL is I would post a pic of it. Thanks for the good info from all, especially not running the bowls empty and damaging the motor eventually. Im gonna have to try the turning it to the right prior to tilting it.

I figured it out, with help from reading another post. I have since added a drop hitch on the truck, this is the first day I towed the boat home.
