Started the boat the other day and everything was normal until I noticed water coming out from under the cowl. I opened the cover and found water squirting out the vent hole on the poppit. I took the poppit apart and put it back together about three times until it finally stopped leaking. Any ideas what caused this? I’ve never has seen it before.

Re: Leaking at poppit valve

This can be caused by a simple bad seal of the diapram... It has happened to me several times...

It would be a good idea to replace at "least" the diapram as they are fairly fragile and loose their integrity after a while...

It's also possible that your outer plate is a little corroded and has actually been eaten up a little bit through the years (I know mine has some pretty good pits in it)...

Also make sure that the poppet is seating properly, there should be a grommet in the block and the poppet slides into it.. If it's not seating into it properly that will add to the problem.. But I think the diapram is not seated well against the inner and outer plates... That's my guess...

Let us know...
If I remember correctly, I think you have a V6 so take a look at this link...
poppet

Yep, it's a 1986 175 Black Max.
It was just kind of strange how it started out of the blue. I had just replaced all the guts and had been out a few times before this happened. I guess I'll order a new cover plate just in case it happens again.
