hello all!

i've been lurking for a while and finally registered. i'm looking for a little advice.

i work on my 83 jeep engine and am very comfortable underneath it's hood. however, a marine engine intimidates me. i just got an 84 merc black max (oil injected) from a friend and it runs great. we've fished it for about four or five years now.

i just changed the plugs checked the wires and replaced the lower unit oil. it can run all day long at 3000-3100 rpms. anything over that for any length of time and the water temp starts rising. i am pretty sure it needs a new impeller but want to take it to the dealer and have them replace it the first time (170 quote). the quote included replacing the water pump. the impeller kit is 40 dollars. the impeller and water pump kit is 50 dollars. it would only cost me 10 dollars more to have both replaced. i didn't think that was too bad. what do you all think???

i think that if i have it replaced by the dealer, next year i will have already read up on how to do it myself. What do you all think?

Thanks,
Massey

Since it is that old, I would have the pump kit put in. You might also want to have the poppet valve checked. That could affect your cooling at higher RPM's.

Welcome to iboats!

Buy a manual for your engine - it will always be useful. I'm sure that if you are capable of working on your Jeep then you can do most things on your O/B - plus you always have the helpful bunch on this board if you get stuck.

Good Luck. ;)

A question about the poppet valve was next, it will be checked out. I think that with a manual and this site I'll be more confident working on the engine. Thanks for the responses.

Massey
