Hello - We recently purchased a pontoon boat and have a motor that has some troubles. The Lower Unit GearCase housing has broken and we need to replace just the casing. We have the gears and everything but I was wondering if anyone knew where we could even start to find something that would fit our current motor?
Its a Merc 650

1964 Mercury 650 outboard motor.

Actually any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Mercury 650 - Outboard - Gear Housing

I'm having similar issues also with my '64 Merc 650, I have a crack in the Lower Gear housing. I'm not sure where to look for one either. Any information or articles on how to replace the lower gear housing or a place online to find the gear housings would be awesome.

I have a 1973 mercury 650. Lower unit is perfect and always ran in fresh water. If it will work I can take it off and sell it. Reply and let me know. I am new to this board so I am not sure how to contact people or be contacted with out making everything public information. Just trying to help.

Look for a marine recycler. The housings are usually in pretty good shape as it's the internals that usually fail. And recyclers around here at least charge next to nothing for odd parts like that.

If that 1973 will fit that might just work perfect. I'll need to do some research and see if its compatible with a 1964 650. I'll get back with ya. THanks

Hey Everyone - Does anyone know of a good website to check engine campatibility? I need to see if the 73 or 78 lower unit housing would fit our 1964. Thanks

A three cylinder 65hp lower unit is not compatible with a four cylinder 65hp.

After some reading I don't think the 73 will fit either. Compatibility lists show 63 - 67 will fit. I'll do some more checking. Thanks
