The battery on my Bennington 2575fs tri toon is located right in front and below of my 150hp Mercury Optimax. I trimmed the engine up all the way at the end of last season. The engine completely blocks access to the battery in this position and yes you guessed it my battery is dead! If I could just trim it back down I could access battery! Any way to do this manually? Believe I have seen advertisement for a charger or emergency jumper that connects through cigarette lighter port on boat. Any Ideas????????? Pilldoc.

If you can get the cowling off your motor, you can use a jumper cable to CAREFULLY connect to the battery cables on motor long enough to trim it down. You should be able to find the largest wires on the motor. One should be red (+) and the other black (-). The cigarette lighter should work if you have the adapter. Good luck.

your tilt unit has a manual release screw. you will see it located through a hole on the side of the tplate bracket about half way up. otherwise just jump a battery to the same location your existing battery connects on the engine.

On most motors there is a screw you can use to manually release tilt. I'm don't know if the 150 has this or not. Maybe someone can chime in on this.

Pilldoc,
The bracket that the bolts go through to mount engine to boat. Should be on right side down near bottom. It will have a large screwdriver slot in it.

This has nothing to do with the hydraulics does it? I won't start loosing fluid if I loosen?

This just bypasses check valve. Turn the screw counterclockwise 3 to 4 turns. Have someone hold onto motor as it will drop rapidly. When you are finished, don't forget to retighten screw. Good luck.

Sorry but when you say right side are you looking at engine from inside the boat or from behind boat?

Do you have an owners manual, that should show you exactly how to find and use the bypass screw. this will generally be located on the hydrolic lift pump/motor. Your battery will most likly be shot, or will be usless as a dependable starting batt. When storing your boat for winter remove your batt. and charge it up for 12 to 24 hours and place an a shelf in a warm area if poss. meaning if you get freezing weather in your area keep it inside, also put a peice of wood under it. I have always keept my batt. warm & charged all winter and off the concreat floor, this will help save your batt. in top operating condition for several years.

Thanks 700xc, but unfortunately I can not find. I was finally able to "stand on my head" and get the cover off the battery. I now have a 6amp charger on it hoping it will at least charge enough to get trim to work! Heck of a situation. Boat sits in lake year round (mild climate) and I do not have a trailer so tough to do repair work.

I have a 115 and it is on the right side if you are behind motor. Not sure about yours. Look for holes in the side of the plate. There may be more than one but one of them will have the screw.

Re: can I trim down manually? can't get to my battery!!!!

Thanks guys! I found the screw and the engine dropped down allowing me access. The only concern I had was the screw was just below the waterline. I hope I did not contaminate anything by doing this underwater!

Re: can I trim down manually? can't get to my battery!!!!

Ok guys, when i bypassed the pump by turning screw counterclockwise the engine did drop but not all the way (trim gauge says 5.1). It did however allow me enough room to get to the battery which i installed. The boat started and is running great BUT now the engine will not trim up or down regardless of which switch I use to activate(one on trottle-gear selector or the one on side of engine itself). Before getting your advice I had attempted to use a portable battery supply connected through my cigarette lighter receptacle to try to start boat (which failed) and also to power the trim motor. Three questions:
1. Did releasing the bypass screw while underwater possibly allow water to enter pump and ruin it?
2. Could I have possibly ruined pump or solenoid by using the portable battery jumper?
3. Since the engine sat in the lake all winter with the engine trimmed all the way up, is it possible the hydraulic pumps two trim rods (don't know tech name but what lifts engine) have developed some corrosion due to exposure preventing them functioning?

Pilldoc
