we have just replaced the water pump impeller and the tell tale squirts water out nicely when at idle however when the boat speeds up the output starts to sputter, it does not slow down and dibble out but pushes the water out fast and air with it, looks like its running out of water to pump throuhg the system. As yet we cannot figure out where this air is coming from, does anyone have any ideas as to why this would happen?

the engine is an old mercury 1150 (115hp inline 6 1976)

Could the engine be mounted to high, or trimmed up too much, so that the water intake is rising above the water surface?

Are you sure you installed the impeller with the vanes in the correct direction ? Was everything OK before the impeller change ?

I used to think that with my merc as well but it was the wind cutting into the stream makes it look like it was sputtering when it wasnt.
maybe it's the same illusion with your rig ?

Re: tell tale output very sparadic at high speeds

all good suggestions, however ones i had previously thought of. Since we tried sitting still in the water and increasing the revs on the engine and the problem still occurred it was not to do with the water intake rising above the water as we checked it. The impeller is installed correctly, we pulled it out and checked it and all was fine and as for the wind it was not windy when we tested.

So, at out wits ends we ripped the leg off again and took out the water pump housing and the base it sits on and we discovered a small gap where it should seal between the piece that sits on top of the vertical shaft bearings and where the exhaust gas flows back down past the bearing housing in the gearbox. We think this would allow exhaust gas to get sucked into the water intake when the exhaust gas pressure increases and the suction from the impeller also increases. So maybe exhaust gas was getting into the water intake. We have rebuilt the leg where it was not sealing properly and reinstalled everything, only thing left to do now is test it. Just waiting for some of the gasket goo to set so in about half an hour we should know if that was the problem...

thanx again for all the good suggestions.

Gasket goo will get you trouble every time, thats why they make replacement gaskets, it has some good uses, but is misused more times than not

isoaga,
my 90hp does same exact thing. but guage on console reads correct psi's at all rpm's. do you have a water pressure guage??
