My uncle passed away and left me his fishing boat. It has a '94 mercury 90hp engine on it. It hasn't been craked in 3 years. I'm having touble staring it. I've replaced the spark plugs, and replaced the fuel filter. I've removed the old gas(added fresh gas) and still no luck. What's my next step? Rebuild carb?

First off, get a maual. Then the impeller in the waterpump is toast, you need to rebuild it. Change out the lower unit oil while you are at it. Next, the fuel pump is probably toast also, you need to rebuild that also. Check all the fuel and vacume hoses and the oil line hoses, If they are hard or cracked you need to replace them also. When you pump the bulb, dose it get hard?

What procedure are you using to start it.

After working with the engine last night I got it to trun over. I got it to idel for about a minute. It seems the impeller is ok because I get water coming from the pee hole. It seems that the fuel pump needs a little work. It cranks good when I choke it but dies off after a couple of seconds. It looks like I need a good tune-up. Rebuild the carb, rebuild the fuel pump, replace the impeller, grease up everything, Change the oil.......

My procedure used for cranking it is:
1) prime the bulb
2)choke it(push the key in)
3)turn the key while key is pressed in
4)if I have trouble I raise the idle

This seems to work but the engine wont stay cranked.

Here is my next question. Is it worth the time and headache I will save to have a professional do this work?

Thanks for the reply LubeDude.

have you looked at he price of motors of that size. manuals are cheap to the price of a mechanic if you want to do something like this. and you may have broke a ring and need to check compression now to make sure that didn't happen.
also oil any motor that has set for a long time by taking the plugs out. and change oil. oh and never start it out of water it screws up the pump. and i have a 100hp motor about the same suitation...mudrow
