I have a 25 horse Merc model 1-025301WD serial # - 0T093900. It runs like a top and will start on the 2nd or 3rd pull cold everytime. My problem is the electric start. With a new fully charged battery, clean cable ends, and good connections on both ends it still acts like its got a dead battery. This engine only has 15 hours of run time.

Re: Starter problem

Right off the bat I would say that probably the solinoid is your problem. You can try jumpering around the solinoid and see if the starter bumps.
May also be your starter button.

Re: Starter problem

When you hit the started button the starter gear will turn slowly then it engages the flywheel and thats where it stops.

Re: Starter problem

Howdy, EF.

Get a voltmeter and measure the voltage from the starter hot terminal to the starter motor case with the starter engaged. If it reads over 10.5 volts your starter needs work. If it reads under that you have a low resistance somewhere else in the high current circuit that is using up the volts.

Since you have cleaned all terminals and charged the battery your top suspects are an internally corroded cable, solenoid or the electrical contact between the starter case and the engine block. By measuring the voltage "drop" across each suspect you can isolate the resistance. None should drop over about .5 volts.

Good luck. :)

Make sure of the neg. - part of the circut. You can hook up a cable, such as a booster cable, from the neg "-" on the battery, to the starter case, or mounting bolt. Then see how it turns, if it is still the same, you have at least eliminated the negative side as a suspected bad connection. good luck, Joe
