Re: Merc 135 chugs when cold ?
I'll bet you thought we forgot about you. We don't know if you have an inline-6 or a V-6. I'm betting it's a V-6?

It sounds like a stator problem to me. That makes the electricity for the spark. There are separate windings for low and high RPMs. I think there's a break in the circuit of the high speed windings.

As the engine RPMs rise, voltage from the low speed windings drops off and the high speed windings take over. The most common failure of a stator is an internal broken wire that you'll never be able to find or fix. Motor heat expands things and the broken ends meet. Things cool and the ends separate again. Methinks you need a new stator. That's a part that has a high failure rate with Mercs. But I'd have it tested first. It's an expensive part worth further testing before being pronounced Dead.

It could also be a bad switchbox with the same internal problem, running on 3 or 4 cylinders until things heat up and the ends meet. Those are another high failure rate part and also very expensive. Same thing could happen to the trigger.
