I recently picked up a sailboat that has a merc O/B on it, and it has a 7.5 cover on it...then...I found a 9.something cover in what of the storage compartments. The serial is 7194460 ..Any help? I havent found this number anywhere.

Also, This motor is electric start, but I know I cant get parts anymore so I am going to remove the components...which leaves me with cranking the bad boy.

The (flywheel?) wont even budge. I have heard that I need to put some oil somewhere to get this guy turning, but no luck this morning. Please help.

Where did you get the idea that you can't get parts, Brian? Of course you can get parts.

Someone will read your S# and tell us all what year and hp it is.

I have seen many sail auxiliaries and fishing boat kickers lock up from extended lack of use in a marine environment.

Remove the spark plugs and give each cylinder a shot of oil (I use penetrating oil on the guess that the freeze-up is simply a bit of cylinder wall corrosion). Give it a few days to soak, then try turning the flywheel by hand.

No luck there? Tell us what has happened, then get yourself a service manual and tear her down (in that order).

Start here for parts: http://www.boatmotors.com/parts/

Used parts can be found at Twin City Outboard.

Good luck. :)

I most certainly will try and get some oil in the cylinder.

When I try and turn the flywheel, should it be reletively easy? If I cannot turn the boat flywheel, what should I do next?

Also, could someone please tell me what model/yr I have?

much thanks.

Hi Brian,
Are you trying to move the flywheel itself or are you trying to pull the recoil handle and it's not moving? There is a lock-out on later 7.5/9.8s the locks the recoil if you were to try to start the motor in gear.
Are there any decals or stickers on the motor block that read "Comet"? It should have the word "Lightning" embossed on the block's starboard side - that designates it as an 11-cube block and is on both the 7.5 and 9.8 block. The "Comet" designation was for 7.5s only as they had smaller intake and exhaust ports.
Your serial number falls into the Canadian serial number series (7-millions) so that's probably where the motor orignated. I don't have a Canadian serial number breakdown, so I can't nail the year for you. A pic of both motor covers might help, though. Do the decals on both covers match? Does one match the decals on the lower trim cover under the bottom cowl?

- Scott

Thanks a bunch for the info so far.

I have taken the recoil portion off, so I am just trying to move the flywheel by hand. I took off one of the spark plugs last night and lubed it up a bit, but tonight I plan on getting the other out and putting more non-penetrating oil in both.

Mine does say "comet" on the block itself. Another name that has confused the crap out of me.

Keep it coming. I really would like to get this motor running . Thanks for your help everyone.
