I have a 19ft Bayliner Capri (1950) with a 135hp Mercruiser.

I want to install a second battery with a selector switch. I understand that this is a simple task from articles on the internet, but I gave a question.

Can I connect the two battery grounds together or is that not acceptable?...Basically go from Bat1 ground to bat2 ground to ground. OR does each battery need a seperate ground?

Re: Dual Battery Question

u mean do u have to have switch the negative as well as the positive.. ??

i think its normal just to switch the positive connection.. one battery on.. the other battery on.. both batteries on.. or both batteries off..

the two negatives can stay connected..

trog

ps.. i think i misunderstood your question.. u can do it as u say or u can have two seperate grounds.. whichever is easier..

Re: Dual Battery Question

I have a dual battery setup with a Guest switch. There is only one neg cable from the switch to the batteries and there is a cable linking both neg terminals together.Works great.

Re: Dual Battery Question

It Usually makes more sense to run a Single lead from Each Battery to the Nearest point on the engine's Block.......

But,..... Ayuh,....... You Can dasiy chain the Ground from 1 Battery to the Next,... To Ground.......

Re: Dual Battery Question

You just simply connect the positive to the positive and the negative to the negative, then they are connected in parallel. If the batteries are close to each other you just need 2 short jumpers.
