Needles won't hold, flooding IL-6

Rebuilding carbs on inline 6 cylinder distributor ignition with backdrag carbs. Model 900 90HP. I have done everything the manuals address concerning the floats and needles and seats and still cannot get the middle and bottom carb to stop flooding gas when squeezing the primer bulb. Are there any tricks concerning this that I need to know about?

Yep, just one. The pressure produced when squeezing the bulb is WAAAAAAAAY higher than the pump can produce. Pushing the needles off their seats is not uncommon, in fact on those engines it's often necessary. Those engines LOVE fuel when starting cold.<br /><br />You'll find that when the engine is running the needles will be just fine. <br /><br />Chris.......

Agree with Chris, my merc 1000 will leak gas out of the carbs if I overprime. I just pump until hard then give 1 extra for good measure. The middle and bottom carbs are the first ones to leak because they are inline with fuel pump. These carbs also like to leak fuel when tilted forward to far.

My middle carb always leaks when I pump up, but never when I am running. Everything works good, so I am not taking it apart. Besides, that bit of seepage is great for starting, it starts easier with the seepage.

It ran just fine and did not leak a bit while running. It was the first one of these old inlines that I had rebuilt carbs on. Nothing like experience!
