Mercury 45 Electrical Ignition Problems

 I have a 1987 Mercury 45 (Classic 50) engine on a Bass Tracker TX-17 boat. Currently, I have been having firing/electrical problems in the #3 and #4 spark plugs. When I crank the motor, the Fuel mixture comes out of the exhaust/prop and smokes badly when I turn off the motor.

Recently, I found out thru my mechanic that I needed a switchbox. He told me that my #3 and #4 plugs were not firing correctly and were not getting enough voltage.

Background info:

I have or have had a new Trigger put on (November 2003); a new Switchbox last month; and a new Rectifier. When I put the Trigger on, the boat ran fine up until August of 2004. Then, I began to notice fuel bubbles oozing up through the water and fuel on the top of the water.

Therefore, I pulled the boat out of the water and had my mechanic do some tune up work and he told me about the switchbox. He said that he put a new switchbox and rectifier on and the motor ran fine and he could tune it up. He said he would leave it on but for $410, I told him to take it off, that I could not afford that right now. I then bought the new switchbox and rectifier myself and put them on the motor last week. I grounded the switchbox and did everything the instructions said to do, and the motor continues to burn/fire only the #1 and #2 cylinders, and not the #3 and #4 cylinders.

Tests:

Since then, I ran some electrical tests. I checked the ohms to the Stator wires. I first checked the Blue-to-Blue/White wires. I turned the key on and My Radio Shack meter read 20 (Rx1000). It would get up to 50 and flutter when I tried to crank the motor. I got the same readings on the Red-to-Red/White wires.

Next, I took a Circuit/Current Probe Tester and grounded it to the power head/motor. I then began to check the Stator wires going to the Switchbox. I touched the Red wire and the bulb lit up. I then touched the Red/White wire and the bulb lit up. Next, I touched the Blue wire and the motor tried to shut off. Last of all, I touched the Blue/White wire and the motor again tried to shut off. Is this right? Should it be doing this?

I ran some similar tests w/ my Probe Tester on the positive terminals at the coil packs leading to the spark plugs. The bulb lit up for the #1 and #2 coils, but, I could only “hear” an electrical connection on the #3 coil (and the bulb did not light up). The #4 coil did not light up when I touched the positive terminals.

It is my belief that the Stator needs replacing. I am new to this, but through my research of this problem, all of the symptoms point toward either a faulty Switchbox or Stator.

I need any available info I can get. I am new to this and have a Seloc Manual for this motor. I have done some of the electrical tests but I am unsure of what to be looking for (I only have a meter purchased from Radio Shack). I do not wish to spend too much time and money on this. I want to get back to fishing!

Sounds to me like a bad fuel pump dia.

It's been a while since I had to do a stator test on my 1987 but I experienced bad stator wiring beneath the flywheel at the bend it makes as it head down the side of the block - which fried my stator and rectifier. Flywheel puller ran about $22 and stator was about $100.

Something I left out from my earlier posting: When the mechanic did the tune up w/ "his" switchbox and said everything worked, he said the voltage on each sparkplug was 230+ (the same for each sparkplug). When he put my old switchbox back on he said he got 230+ for #1 and #2 sparkplugs, but, he got less than 150 on his voltage meter for the #3 and #4 sparkplugs. As I stated before, since then, I have purchased a new switchbox from CDI and the same thing occurs. All measurement readings were still out of whack and was wondering if I am checking the right equipment. I know the problem is electrical and I still believe it is my stator. I have a puller on order now, and I will probably purchase a new stator for my motor. Currently, I am looking for any other options you folks may have for me that I have not checked. Thanks for your input.

Re: Mercury 45 Electrical Ignition Problems

My (Seloc) numbers are different than yours. Stator test. Disconnect all stator wires from the switchbox. Use cold engine. Blue-Blue/White R x 1000 = 5.7-8.0 ohms. Red-Red/White R x 1 = 56-76 ohms. Blue to ground R x 1000 = no cont. Red to ground R x 1000 = no cont. Disconnect trigger leads. Brown-White/Black R x 100 = 7-10 ohms. White-Violet R x 100 = 7-10 ohms.

Re: Mercury 45 Electrical Ignition Problems

Thanx Baitis for the info. My wife's cousin (he used to repair motors at Bass Pro Shops in Atlanta) and I ran these tests (the Stator failed the tests) and he came to the same conclusion as I did: The Stator must be bad. I found one for sale (a new one from CDI Electronics) and purchased it. I will put it on when it shows up and we'll see what happens!

Thanx again!

Laddies,
I got a question for you. '81 Merc 45 seems to run better since I replaced the stator, trigger, switchbox, but, it still runs rough. There is some fuel coming out of the exhaust (but, not as much before and the motor does not choke itself off). The mechanic I used before said he did a complete tune up w/ my carbs, etc. Would he or should he have replaced my fuel pump/diaphrams, etc? Or what do I need to do? Please help. Thanks.

Alot of service personal don't do anymore than they have too, to get the unit out the door. Not knowing the poilcey of the shop that did the work it's hard to tell what they call a tune up, but you should not have fuel running or dripping out of the prop--Bob

Thanx for the reply. Yesterday, I purchased a fuel pump diaphragm kit. Should this eliminate the excess fuel problem? I don't know if was clear or not but the motor runs better now, it just seems to "bounce" or "shake" when I cut it on. I am going to check the electrical one more time (spark plugs, switchbox, stator,) but could it be that all I need to do is replace the fuel pump diaphragm? Any advice much appreciated. Thanx again!
