If its just bent...pull the shaft and take it to a machine shop and let them straighten it. I bent the fool out of mine and I had it straightened out. I borrowed a spanner wrench and that was the only thing i needed. I already had a manual.

25 HP Mercury Bent Prop Shaft

I am trying to help a buddy who has a 25 HP 2 Stroke 1992 Mercury get ready for a Cannada fishing trip at the end of this month. When replacing the propeller, we noticed that the prop shaft is bent about 1/4 inch. Not sure how this happened, but I am sure this is something that needs fixed before additional damage occurs. I don't think the motor has been run much in this condition and it is otherwise a great motor.

I've done some tune up jobs and replaced water pumps but I don't know if it is out of my league and I don't want to totally screw up his motor. One boat place quoted $350 for new shaft, bearings, seals, and labor to get it taken care of. I am wondering if this is something I should attempt on my own.

Does this job require special tools?

Does the lower unit have to come off or can I leave it on?

Does anyone sell a kit with a new prop shaft and all the parts I need to replace in the process?

Thanks in advance,

Tom Travis

Re: 25 HP Mercury Bent Prop Shaft

Thanks guys. We wound up takng it in for the $350 fix. This did not include a new prop shaft but a used one. I did not have the time or courage to attempt fixing this myself before our big fishing trip at the end of this month. I believe I am fortunate to have a boat salvage place nearby because a new prop shaft costs around $342 new.
