Hi all. Have a 2001 Merc 25HP 2 stroke long shaft, manual start motor for my RIB, external tank, stored last fall for winter. Tried starting for 1st time this year and the motor gave me troubles. Here are the symptoms:

* Initially started with old plugs after priming/choking. It actually started 1st pull. As it normally does.
* After lessening choke, the engine stalled, but restarted briefly, then would stall again after 10 seconds or less.
* After 5-6 starts and stalls, engine would not re-fire at all. At that point my arm was tired and ready to fall off, so I pulled the plugs and tugged a few more times thinking it was flooded. Cleaned plugs, retried to no avail.

Next day:
* I changed the plugs to new ones (not 100% on the proper gap, but will look at the owners manual later) Still no good.

* I know it's bad, but i tried a tiny bit of ether (starting fluid) and that didn't work either.

* I noticed the old fuel (in the 6 gallon container) is not quite right or clear as new (I remember using stabilizer, but that was Oct'04 and the quantity used escapes me now) Will be disposing the old fuel and utilizing new asap!

Any advice as to what to try or do? Thanks Much.

I'd try getting fresh 50:1 fuel mix and it wouldn't hurt going through the carburetor to check and make sure it isn't gummed up. Rather than using ether use some of the fresh 50:1 premix fuel and spray directly in the carb throat. Also, check your fuel line from the tank to the engine. Those lines have o-rings in them that will go bad and cause the engine to suck air around the coupler where it attaches to the tank or engine.

Howdy, MD1, and welcome to iboats. :)

You need fresh fuel mix. You probably have a gummed up carb, as EFH suggests, but lets do this systematically.

There is a troubleshooting procedure for "Outboard wont start" in the Engine FAQs. Check it out and let us know what you find.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB. Just found the site, but it looks like it is loaded with an enormous amount of info. I will do as you say and let you know what I find.

Re: 2001 Mercury 25 HP Starting Problem

First off... Thanks guys, the starting problem seems to be fixed. Here is what I did:

1 - Emptied the primer bulb and hoses of any older fuel as well as got fresh fuel and proper mix for the tank.
2 - Used carb cleaner to clean the fuel filter (which is removable)and sprayed carb cleaner into the carb.
3-Removed plugs and pull started the engine to get out any carb cleaner, old gas etc.
4- Also drained any remaining fuel from the internal fuel lines and hose inlet from tank.
5- Put plugs back in after gapping, primed bulb/fuel filter and cranked. Seemed like it wanted to start. Took your advice about squirting the gas into carb direct. I used an old squirt gun (sorry kids!) to spray fuel into carb thru a cutout Merc provides.... BAMM...she started... and died.
6- With engine in water, did same thing with full choke and started again. Needed to keep choke applied for a while. Eventually it seemed to idle decently.
7- Took it out for a 15 minute ride, variying throttle.... and now seems ok.

Again..THANKS!
