Mercury 650 won't stay running

its a 1972 merc 650 el,it will start with the spark advance all the way forward and continue to run however if you back the advance lever down the engine will die.Can anyone give me a direction to start in? Thanks in advance,

Clean the carbs well and go through the timing and sych procedure. (search this forum for the "timing and sync" post I did.<br /><br />-W
