I was looking at a 225 on ebay and the stated he had removed the thermostats due to overheating. Since the thermostats open at a relative low temp..(140 I think) would this be a problem?

Yep,

You don't want to run that motor without the stats... They are designed to regulate the water flow through the heads and ensure proper cooling capabilities in relation to the temp.

You can remove the stats, but you must install a washer with a 3/16 hole in it to regulate the water flow. It will also burn more gas with the stats out. good luck...

Not a good way to solve an overheat problem.... And not as the motor was designed....
