Hi Folks,

Got my inline 6 merc 1150 powerhead mounted, managed to remould the plate the powerhead bolts onto with jb weld. Got all electrics fitted and hooked up the battery.

Whapped the compression tester on cylinder no 1 removed all plugs, opened throttle wide open and spun engine on starter... Completed this process on all cylinders. Results -

1 - 140psi
2 - 140psi
3 - 140psi
4 - 140psi
5 - 135psi
6 - 140psi

Don't know what im supposed to expect from a 1972 inline but given that I haven't yet started and warmed it up yet they seem pretty good.

Your thoughts appreciated guys...

Can someone also advise me where the little black wire from the mercury tilt switch goes on the back of my switch box.. i forgot to take a picture...

One other thing.. My lower unit is removed at the moment to have the top driveshaft seal replaced. Is it safe to put a hose onto the water pipe at the base of the leg to give it a trial run?

Kind Regards...

Stan :D

Compression is great, don't hook up the mercury switch till you make sure the engine will run, it won't hurt to run with a hose like your thinking

Re: Progress and Compression..Please help guys!!!

Thanks for the prompt reply laddies. I wasn't sure if it was safe to just run water through the engine from the tap to hose to copper pipe or if it was imperative to have the water pump on...

When I removed the lower unit the drive shaft came out with it, was this supposed to happen. Things would be a lot easier if i could place the shaft up into the powerhead then fit the lower unit... Tilt and trim not operational yet... thats next on my list for you guys to resolve ;)

Kind and warm regards to all who has helped me get this far!!!

Cheers

Stan

The driveshaft comming out with the lower unit is normal. There is no way that I know of to install the drive shaft seperately. The shift shaft should stay in the center section.

When running the motor with the hose, just keep the water pressure low - so that the pee stream looks the same as when the water pump is installed. To much pressure could be bad. Don't rev the engine too much either. Make sure it's getting water and not a water/air mix.

Ok... Im kinda gutted here guys.

I kinda know what your going to tell me but im going to remain optimistic until you do.

I ran the engine on the hose and water was all pouring out of the bottom of the leg but not out the exhaust. I started the engine and it ran like a pig. Could feel a lot of vibration through the boat as though it wasn't firing on all cylinders. I removed the plugs and each one had a very slight film of beige oily residue.

Your thoughts.....water?????

Stan

I was just thinking, without the crankshaft in the bottom of the powerhead and me running it with a hose on the pick up pipe would that not cause the engine to suck the water into the crankcase?

It would not. If you hook the hose directly to the water-tube. It would not matter if you ran the motor or not. The flow would be the same.

-W (hard drive crashed - causing time scarcity - ongoing)

If water was getting into the engine the plugs would look steam cleaned. Maybe you could post a pic of your beige plugs?

Rough running can be a variety of problems, but with these engines check the carbs first. Are they pouring fuel out the front? Is the gas old? Get some fresh gas/oil, add some seafoam, let the engine run 10 minutes on it, then shut it off and let it sit overnite.

I'll see if I can post a pic of the plugs but there were beads of water in there also... I'll post the full story next and perhaps things will be a little clearer... Thanks guys

Re: Progress and Compression..Please help guys!!!

I've posted this very message over on the bigweek merc inlines forum also -

Hello guys,

Pretty gutted as I type this as I feel my my powerhead may be going in the
bin.

To explain what has been done....This is a long haul, your patience
appreciated.

I removed my powerhead as there was water coming out of the base of the
exhaust manifold cover plates at the bottom. There was also water coming
from around the plug holes. I ran a compression test and discovered 2
cylinders were down dramatically.

I managed to find another powerhead with compression results as follows.

1 - 140psi
2 - 140psi
3 - 140psi
4 - 140psi
5 - 135psi
6 - 140psi

However the crankcase cover plate was cracked and the starter motor mount
was broken off.

I know it is a bit hit and miss but with the advice and help from folks on
iboats I swapped the crankcase covers to find that that the difference was
nearly nothing and in order to get an absolutely perfect fit I had to remove
one of the guide dowels and very carefully allow the reed blocks guide me
into place.

All sealed up and rocking!

Next I removed the exhaust manifold cover plate as it was missing a bolt in
the centre and I could not get another bolt to thread into it. When I
removed the plate I discovered that part of the alloy where the bolt threads
into was broken away. As an attempted solution to this I placed a broken
stainless steel bolt head in the cover plate and filled over the recess in
the plate with jb weld to stop any water coming out.

I then used the correct gasket sealer kindly supplied by Wayne on all the
now scrupulously clean mating surfaces with new gaskets and torqued to
specification.(Having to now ignore the missing bolt filled with jb weld)

Replaced the gasket on the spark plug side water cover and all the gaskets
on the fuel pump side of the head.

Rebuilt all carbs to secification replacing everything including floats.

Rebuilt the fuel pumps.

Mounted the powerhead.

Connected everything back following the instructions in the Mercury manual.

At this point in time my lower unit is removed as there is water getting in
due the top driveshaft seal leaking so I connected a hose to the water pick
up pipe and run water through until water is pouring from the base of the
leg and I have a consistent pee stream. I notice at this point water leaking
slightly from some of the bolts in the exhaust cover plate however, not a
major amount...none the less dissapointing.

Prime up the bulb and it goes hard as expected, I give it a birl on the
starter and after a little bit of choke and some throttle it kicks and runs,
with lots of vibration through the boat as though its not running on all
six. Then swifty cuts out and seems to kick back the way.

I run it again, with absolutely no chance of it idling.... Take it to about
2k rpm and then it just fouls up and cuts out again...

This is the bit that annoys me..... I remove the plugs and one by one they
are coated in a coffee like substance and what looks to be beads of water...

Where I go from now will be with your guidance folks...

Many Thanks...

A sincerely gutted Stan :-(
