I'm in the process of changing shift and throttle cables on a 86 90hp Merc inline six. The controls are a Merc remote commander 2000. I have the factory outboard manual, but the page that shows and identifies the cable connections to the motor is too dark to make out very well. I'm trying to find out which cable in the control box (upper vs lower) is the shift and which is the throttle. And trying to figure out the same on the motor end. I've got my teleflex xtremes and want to tackle this tomorrow, so if anyone can help, please let me know.
thanks in advance.....
Tony

Tony, When you first put the motor into gear, the gear shift cable moves first, followed by the throttle cable. At the motor, the bottom cable is the shift cable, which attaches to the horizontal arm under the carbs. The top cable attaches to the throttle arm.

This is a really easy one :)

move your warm up throttle lever up and down - the connection that moves in the box is your throttle lever (The upper connector on the motor)

The other cable is obviously your shifting cable (The lower connector on the motor). The best way to adjust this to shift into gear properly is:

Move the slider to the middle and verify that the prop spins freely. That is neutral.

Connect the cable to the gear shifting post.

Use the controls and put it in foward gear.

If the prop doesnt spin freely after a quarter that means you are in foward gear.

Use the controls and put it back into neutral, verify the prop spins freely.

Do the same test as foward gear with the reverse gear.

Put it back in neutral and make sure the prop spins freely again.

If this test works without spinning the cable holder at least 2 times i would be surpised, but i have seen it happen without cable adjustments :)

Hope this helps!
