well I got my dist for my 76' 115 hp merc. it looked great, the seller seemed fair & had great feedback. when I recieved the item & pulled it out of the box I thought I had gotten a gem. I pull the Cap to inspect it & to my surprise I find green corrosion & rust all over the place in there. I even find some water dropletts. I was wondering what I should do if the seller doesn't offer to take it back?

Do I attempt to clean any of these parts or what?

I haven't installed it yet so I don;'t know if it works or not. is there anyway I can test the trigger?

TC

If you got it from me, I'd take it back.

THAT said... a lot of those caps have a little green on the contacts. Scrub the cap and then run it through the dishwasher. Also replace the carbon button if needed.

When you buy a dst. on Ebay, it's the **trigger** you need to make sure is good. the Cap is mostly window dressing.

-W

So the guy wont take it back..

Yea, it's not really the cap I'm concerned about, it's the rotor that has rust at it's base & the copper wheel for the trigger that has a green coat of corrosion on it & no telling what the inside workings of the trigger look like. is there a safe way to clean this up before I install it? Can I test it before I install?

TC

You can test it by hooking it up to the switchbox, then turning on the key and spinning the dist. I'm assuming you tested the switchbox 1st - RIGHT??

-W

did he advertise it as a working unit, or was it sold untested?

You have to take everything you get from E-Bay with a grain of salt. I've bit a couple of times with small items.
I was looking at a pump this weekend, advertised as new, which it probably was, but the seller candidly posted a picture w/a price sticker visible of $279.00. I went to Lowes and looked at the same product for $149.00
Just my 2 cents, nothing to do with boating.

Re: bit by ebay?

Oh yeah, I consider ebay as a gamble, sometimes you get what you expect sometimes you don't. He did nothing wrong, said it worked when it was pulled off the motor, I failed to ask how long ago it was pulled. Turns out it was several years ago & the item had been stored poorly. lesson learned.

NO suggestions on how to clean this thing? My old dist looks much newer & better than this one on the inside. I guess I could atleast swap rotor. anyone know how?

well I cleaned it up some & tested it by hooking it up to the switch box. I got spark on all plugs, but it was weak @ times.

Not "everything", the good guys out there have a return policy. I'm very sure of that. :)

As to the original problem, the manual describes the dissasembly of the distributor if you wanna make one outta two.

-W
