We just purchased a 1965 Merc. 200 20hp, We got it running but now it leaks fuel from bewteen the case halves, The engine is still factory sealed, so what caused this?? is it from just being old and sitting or is there something else we should look for??

Thats a common problem with those engines some leaked within a year, if it runs alright don't worry about it just run it if it don't you will have to reseal it

Definitely reseal it. Crankcase leakage can cause a lean condition and it'll only get worse. Besides, it's messy as all heck. We old outboarders have enough problems with the "green" folks without running motors that leak, seap, stink, etc. more than they have to....

Resealing the crankcase isn't a difficult job, but a manual is a must. That's a solid old motor - take care of it! and it'll take care of you...

- Scott

If it were me, I'd reseal it. I'd be afraid of it getting worse and causing a lean condition like Scott mentioned.

When I took Marine Tech class in high school, we had an Evinrude that leaked at the case halves. Rather than tear it all apart, our teacher/owner of the Marina just cleaned the block real good and then put some epoxy on the joint.

That might be a quick fix if you don't want to tear it down. I don't know what others will think about it, but I'm just throwing it out there.
