See Help: Mercury Six cylinder. Where is serial number. In the abscence of serial number, will a block number work? Where do I look? Old motor, much painted and modified! Thank you ever so for your kindness and consideration.

It's on a plate mounted on the outside edge of the clamp bracket.

A brit!! Countries have gone to war over lesser insults :D

I gotta get back to work, I'll leave you to trawl through the thousands of merc serial numbers. You'll need a PDF reader.

http://www.maxrules.com/merc_contents.html

Good luck.

Aldo

Well, must be yesterday somewhere. Are you back from work? Don't know if you have picked up on the other threads but I haven't made much progress in identifying this motor. The only significant thing I found on the motor, aside from several casting numbers is "Full Jeweled Super Marathon". It is also cast on the lower unit. Using the Mark 78 model was to no avail. The horsepower lists only show 3 cylinders in the 70 HP range. Other HP values are not positive either. I just hope that cc gets the pictures and that he will respond. Good Yesterday

Correction: The serial number is between the mounting brackets. Not much paint but a lot of grease.

I wasn't sure which thread to reply too, so I'm here.

A picture is probably your best bet now.
I gather that you have e-mailed pics to clams, give him time to respond. Keep bumping your post up to the top of the list so it doesn't get lost in the crowd.

Regard, your sensitive Aussie - Aldo

Thanks for your understanding. Pictures have been sent. As to bumping this thread up I think it is only going to attract trolls. It isn't hard to offend someone who goes around with a chip on his shoulder. New wrinkle is the plate I found says. Merc Model 700E. I had the serial number at the tip of my fingers when I was broad sided by the admirals of the foe rimmmmm. I am learning my way around now and will not be stepping on as many toes. Basically, I don't take myself as seriously as other people so maybe that is a problem too. Again, my apologies for misidentifying your country of origin. When you live in a global economy you still have to acknowledge individual loyalities and understand the difference.

The worm turns. What brand of diplomacy do recommend? Even my patience is limited.

No, the worm hasn't turned, I'm just reading on the sidelines and offering my opinion - as ill informed as it may be.
From where I sit, I have done nothing but try and impart some of my very limited knowledge and you have responded in a polite manner. But it would seem that you have not shown the same courtesy to others - others who have far more knowledge than I.

When it's all said and done, this is simply a web site that allows people to share their problems and chew the fat over anything to do with boating - it's NOT a technical forum - that's just one of the pleasant offshots that happen when 50,000 people get together. You would be amazed at the amount of techincal knowledge that is just inside your computer screen, but all these people have individual personalities. Clashes occur, appologies made - sometimes not. It's difficult to seperate 'tongue in cheek' from 'sarcasm' via a computer screen. Some of your posts did sound sarcastic, something you can remedy if you so chose.

I hope you stick around, I enjoy a bit of 'tongue in cheek' dialogue. But I'm not the one that can give you the technical advise that you seek.

Aldo

As I said before it hard not to rub some one the wrong way who is predisposed to that condition. You make the decision as to whether it was tongue in cheek or sarcasm. There is value in well placed sarcasm but I had no intention of being sarcastic. Rank has it priviledge I guess. Being a lowly apprentice I should have ask for permission to speak freely. I Intended no offense but it was taken. Thank you for your time and g'day.

G'day, dunaruna. Just marking time 'til I get my book following your example, thought I would put myself in for a promotion. I have a feeling that that I am in the minus category and that numbers will work against me. I was having trouble with my space bar so I pulled it up and cleaned the board and somekeys around it. I put the m and n in reverse so when I tried to type dunaruna it keptcoming up dumaruma. looks like I needto dosome more cleaning, oh well maybe the large checkis what isin order.
