Hi,
My brother and I recently purchased a 2004 Crestliner bass boat with a 60HP Mercury Bigfoot. The boat has the steering column and trim and all the works. We are having a problem getting the boat to get on top of the water though. Here's the deal, we take off with the boat motor trimmed all the way down, as we pick up speed we try to trim up to plane out but the starts hopping (I believe you call it porphing or something). You can barely even trim up at all without it doing this. And the farther you trim up the worse it gets. I got it to about 3/4 the way trimmed up and it was slamming like it was out to kill me! But anyway, I noticed when we are going full throttle we are only doing 35mph. From what I hear, that's about 5 or so mph less than what it should be doing. I figure its cause it won't plane out. Now, when you look back at the motor, its shooting two rooster tails about 9 feet in the air, and these aren't small rooster tails either, and they also aren't coming from the boat, they are coming off the motor. I believe all this is happening because the boat motor is so far down in the water. The boat motor has 5 holes to adjust up and down, and it's all the way down. I believe the dealer I bought it from set it up this way but I do not want to ask him about it cause he was just plane rude once the deal was done and he got his money. When have the boat parked level, I can't even get the boat motor within 2.5 foot or so from the boat without the motor hitting the ground. Everyone I talk to says you should be able to trim the boat motor all the way down and not hit ground. Well this hits the ground while its about 3/4 the way trimmed up on the gauge. The the last 3/4 trim on the gauge doesn't take long to make up but it's still a long way from being trimmed all the way down. With all that being said, should I raise my motor up? Or is this not going to help my problem? Sorry for the long message!
Thanks,
Josh Enochs
