Hi,
My brother and I recently purchased a 2004 Crestliner bass boat with a 60HP Mercury Bigfoot. The boat has the steering column and trim and all the works. We are having a problem getting the boat to get on top of the water though. Here's the deal, we take off with the boat motor trimmed all the way down, as we pick up speed we try to trim up to plane out but the starts hopping (I believe you call it porphing or something). You can barely even trim up at all without it doing this. And the farther you trim up the worse it gets. I got it to about 3/4 the way trimmed up and it was slamming like it was out to kill me! But anyway, I noticed when we are going full throttle we are only doing 35mph. From what I hear, that's about 5 or so mph less than what it should be doing. I figure its cause it won't plane out. Now, when you look back at the motor, its shooting two rooster tails about 9 feet in the air, and these aren't small rooster tails either, and they also aren't coming from the boat, they are coming off the motor. I believe all this is happening because the boat motor is so far down in the water. The boat motor has 5 holes to adjust up and down, and it's all the way down. I believe the dealer I bought it from set it up this way but I do not want to ask him about it cause he was just plane rude once the deal was done and he got his money. When have the boat parked level, I can't even get the boat motor within 2.5 foot or so from the boat without the motor hitting the ground. Everyone I talk to says you should be able to trim the boat motor all the way down and not hit ground. Well this hits the ground while its about 3/4 the way trimmed up on the gauge. The the last 3/4 trim on the gauge doesn't take long to make up but it's still a long way from being trimmed all the way down. With all that being said, should I raise my motor up? Or is this not going to help my problem? Sorry for the long message!
Thanks,
Josh Enochs

Picture would help a lot to see how it is positioned. Anti-ventilation plate above the prop needs to be inline, or slightly above the bottom of the transom. Is there hydrofoils currently mounted on that motor?

Raising the motor up will do wonders based on what you are saying.. AMD is correct about the anti-ventilation plate position. Since you cant drop the motor down when on the trailer it may be hard to tell what the plate position is at in relation to the bottom of the hull. If you have a lift I would go ahead a raise it and position it as AMD suggests... Re-test carefully. You should have your dealer do this though IMO...

There is a hydrofoil on it currently... We just put it on recently... Do I need to align it with the bottom of the transom?

It definately sounds like you need to raise the motor on the transom. If it were me, I would raise the motor so the anticavitation plate is even with the very bottom of the hull and try it. You will probably end up with the plate an inch or so above the hull bottom after all is said and done, but you should start with it even. That way you can ensure that you won't have water pickup issues. I had a similar problem as you do, the motor was far enough down that the water was coming above the cav plate and sending those twin sprays up and out. Now it is gone. Also, when on plane, your hydrofoil should not be in the water or even contacting it much, so you'll want to look at that as well. The foil is just to help get it on plane, it isn't supposed to affect anything once up on plane.

Also, 35 mph on a 16 footer with 60 hp isn't too bad, depending on the weight of the boat. Heck, I barely hit 40 mph on a 16.5 footer with 125 hp. Good luck...

Could it be possible you have a LONG Shaft motor and need a short shaft?
That is what it sounds like to me.

Just my .02 cents

Don't you just hate it when some one asks for help, gets a bunch of advice and then never comes back to let us know what is happening............... damn!
