Techno.... if you supply a pic, you'd be able to provide Clams with enough info to narrow down the engine identification. Rather than create so many new post thrreads, if you can concentrate on only one you would be much further ahead. There is people who visit this forum who can answer your questions. Take the time to listen to what they have to say.

This model is known to have been painted "Burgundy" & "Sand Tan," "Buckskin Beige" & "Sand Tan," "Sandalwood" & "Sand Tan," "Sunset Orange" & "Sand Tan," all "Charcoal." Other colors are possible as well.<br />Model & serial numbers were on the instruction plate riveted to the swivel bracket above and between the clamp screws.. <br />Mark 78E models are Short Shaft, Electric Starting with Alternator. Serial numbers range from 1143038 thru 1145537 and 1166569 thru 1194069.<br />Mark 78EL Long Shaft, Electric Start with Alternator models were produced with serial numbers ranging from 1145538 thru 1146545.<br />These engines do not have a gearshift mechanism. They use a special remote control that provides the ability to start the engine in gear, either forward or backward. (called Direct Reversing.)

my 59 marathon MK75AE ser 1211865 is rated at 60 hp..<br /><br />actually the remote only uses two microswitch's to to starter ..It has two solenoids to spin one way or the other..double bendix drive is on the starter..the lower unt is direct drive no neutral<br />if it is running it is spinning ..<br />never,never use the pull start without a driver<br />varoom , out the back you go..lol<br /><br />the hardest thing to do is set the points ( battery /coil ignition) <br />the distruter has two set of points .one set fires every other cyclinder...they must be set exactly 60 degrees apart..<br />the distributer is the heart of the engine ,,<br /><br />all the throttle does is advance the dist in forward , and retards in reverse ,which actually advances the timing in reverse<br />Have fun with that motor.<br />.<br />oh yeah on mine the prop is left handed two blade ...hard too find those be carefull with it

Now your making Hay. The first thing I am going to need is the small timing belt. I don't see it listed as "readily available" but I am sure it will quickly match up once I know exactly what I have and what will cross match. As I said earlier the boat is a Power Cat mfg in Bellflower in 1962, which if this is indeed Mark 78, makes the motor older than the boat. ADD 50 for the book and 28 to transfer the total....Stay tuned for the "running total"
