Holes in the lower unit *Pics*

I was just inspecting the lower unit when i found some holes north of the anticav... Can this cause water to get into the lower unit gear lube? If its OK i'll ignore it, but what do i have to do if its not OK?<br /><br />

The bottom hole looks to go in the exhaust cavity and the top looks like the cavity by the shift shaft if thats the truth then the unit should not leak and could be repaired with epoxy

So these should be sealed then? What type of epoxy should i use?

Just clean them up and any type of thickened epoxy or epoxy putty will work, I don't think that they would have to be sealed but they won't do anything for the hydrodynamics of the unit--Bob

I can view the pictures but I have to ask, are you sure these holes should be sealed ? Where did they come from ? If original from the factory then leave them alone. If someone has taken a drill bit and bored holes into the lower unit then seal them up - good. Is it corrosion ? My concern would be plugging up holes that were designed to be there for a reason.

I dont know where they came from, they look like they werent meant to be there....

Wow I can see the pics now. Time to patch it up for sure. I'd drain the lube then clean the outside several times REALLY good to remove any trace of oil. Remove the paint down to the bare metal in the repair area and maybe get a small wire brush in there as well to clean up any of the loose crap. Rough it up with 180 grit sandpaper to give the epoxy something to bite onto. Clean it again. There are many good epoxies specifically for aluminum and steel repairs. The key to a good bond is CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN.

Do you have a zinc anode on that lower unit to help prevent corrosion? (trim tab?)

RodC - I will do that tommorow - thanks, I used to do some painting on motorcycles. I know how to clean it pretty well for good adhesion.<br /><br />KCLOST - The Zinc anode didnt come with the motor - but I am getting one. I havent run this motor in the water yet until everthing is in order.
